► Law of Conservation

of Energy, states that

energy cannot be
created or destroyed,
but it can only be
transferred from one form
to another.
Heat- is the transfer of thermal
energy between two systems.
Work- is the force that transfers
energy between a system and
it’s surroundings.
Internal Energy- is all the
energy within a system.
∆U= Q – W
Where:
∆U- is the total change in internal energy within a system.
Q- is the heat exchanged between the system and it’s
surroundings.
W- is the work done by the system..z44
Three types of systems in Thermodynamics:

Open System- where energy and

matter can be exchanged between a
system and it’s surroundings.
Closed System- where only energy
can be exchanged between a system
and it’s surroundings, not matter.
Isolated System- where no energy or
matter is exchanged between a
system and it’s surroundings.
The system can exchange mass and ener
gy through the boundary with the environ
ment.
An example of “closed system” - no mass Surroundings
flow- is the gas confined in a cylinder. The
boundary –in this case real wall- is made b
y the cylinder and the piston walls.
