GALLERIA

DE DAVAO
A PROPOSED MIX-USE HIGH RISE BUILDING
Davao City is a bustling metropolitan and has always
been a melting pot in Southern Philippines as such that
the population in the city is rapidly increasing.

With the help of the city’s comprehensive urban planning,

many places in the city has already been urbanized to
provide accommodation for more people. A surging
construction trend in the city today is the boom of high rise
mixed-used residential buildings such as condominiums.
These buildings provide the populace a place for
commerce, business, leisure and residence on a vertical
platform optimizing the use of space due to is varied
functions on a small plot of land while consequently
earning the city its needed revenue.

Considering the bulging population and the building trend

in the city today, there is a need for more of these mixed
used residential buildings. Thus we are proposing the
GALLERIA DE DAVAO.
The proposed building has
been pre-sited to be located at
the corner of Ma-a Road and
McArthur Highway, fronting the
S&R building.

Due to the living and transport

congestion as well as the
limitation to the building height
of the downtown area the
suburban location has become THE SITE
an auspicious site for a high
rise structure due to its higher
building height limitation and
land availability. Although it is
already located in the suburbs
of Davao it is still quite
accessible to key areas in the
community like business and
commercial centers, schools,
churches, land and air
transport terminals.

The concept for Galleria
De Davao was inspired
from the most popular
orchid that Davao City has
become well-known for
which is the waling-waling
(Euanthesanderiana). It is
considered as the “Queen
of Philippine Flowers” and
worshiped by the Bagobo
(a tribe of indigenous
people in Davao) as a
diwata (fairy). The waling-
waling is an orchid
commonly having four or
five petals from which the
form of the building plan is
taken from. As much,
some design features of
the building are also
inspired from this orchid.
The proposed tower building will consist of 45
floors with 5 different functions or zones:
rentable commercial zone where the mall is
located, rentable office zone for the business
center, residential zone for the condo units,
recreational zone and utility zones.

The proposed tower building will use building

materials that will mimic a plant’s biological
regeneration, humidity control, and energy
harvesting and transformation, as well as
components that will make use of kinetic
energy or impact force for alternative power
sourcing, hybrid or upgraded products of
existing alternative power sources such as
solar energy. All these are for the purpose of
not only reducing the carbon footprint of the
building to make it ‘carbon neutral’ but actually
minimizing the greenhouse gasses in the air,
hence, making it ‘CARBON NEGATIVE’. A
building that can regenerate, breath, process
its own energy and grow can technically be
considered a living organism, thus, a ‘LIVING’
tower.
SELF HEALING CONCRETE is a special type of concrete that heal itself if
there are cracks and other problem in the concrete.
Biological regeneration can be applied in the
proposed building by using SELF-HEALING
POLYMER PLASTIC/COMPOSITE as building
material to replace composite panels used for
building cladding.
It is a building material that, instead of cracking and
weakening over time, actually gets stronger. The
polymer, which continuously converts carbon dioxide
from the surrounding air into a carbon-based
material that reinforces itself, will be used as
construction or repair material, or as a protective
building coating.

GREEN ROOFING and
WATER RECYCLING is
also employed to

negative characteristic
of the proposed
building.
The propose building will be using PARTIALLY TRANSPARENT SOLAR PANELS.
The partially transparent solar panels can absorb 60% of the sunlight they
receive. Compared to the average 15% efficiency of conventional solar
panels, 7.2% efficiency for the partially transparent panels is still quite low.
However, it only means that the less efficient panel needs to be larger than
the more efficient one in order to produce the same amount of electricity.
As transparent solar panels can be integrated into windows in buildings, it
means that the lower efficiency is overcompensated by the potential areas
of employment. Office buildings with large south-facing glass areas are
already employing tinted glass to reduce the transmitted sunlight. The
partially transparent solar panels can replace the conventional tinted glass
so that now it works both as an alternative power harvesting tool and as a
building component.
In the same context as maximizing a single component for multiple
purpose/usage, the proposed building will also employ KINETIC ENERGY
AND SOLAR POWER HYBRID PANELS.
This hybrid panel will take advantage of the abundant rainfall of the city
since Davao's weather pattern is classified as T4, which basically means
sunny mornings and rainy evenings all throughout the year. The hybrid
panel is a solar panel that can generate electricity from falling raindrops
enabling power to flow even when skies cloud over or the sun has set.
The new device places two transparent polymer layers on top of a solar
photovoltaic (PV) cell. When raindrops fall on to the layers and then roll off,
the friction generates a static electricity charge.
Since the proposed building has areas for public
use and concourse, kinetic energy can also be
harvested using pedestrian and vehicle movement
through KINETIC TILES and SMART ENERGY
FLOOR. These tiles generate off-grid electricity just
by walking around or powering streetlights with
your footsteps. Kinetic tiles that generate power
from human movement enable everyone to
generate renewable energy. The Smart Energy
Floor offers a solution to capture the kinetic energy
and solar power that surrounds us. Apart from
engaging people in generating clean energy, it also
enables them to increase their understanding of
sustainability issues, which is necessary to take
the next step in the worldwide energy transition.
