MX MULTICAST REPLICATION

MULTICAST REPLICATION ALGORITHM

Goals
 Same forwarding treatment for unicast and multicast (CoS)
 Simplified logic (better MTBF, power)
Solution
 Implement replication on the line card
 Construct a tree over fabric

Ingress PFE
PFE PFE
Intermediate PFE

PFE PFE
Egress PFE
Each PFE replicates
to local ports

MULTICAST PERFORMANCE
Available resources and
Parsing,
contributors to utilization lookup, filters, PFE
 LU processing capacity counters,
policers, rewrite N x LU
 Packet rate (not size)
 Packet operations (filters,
policers, etc) WAN Fabric
 MQ/XM fabric bandwidth MQ/XM
(egress)
 Unicast towards other PFEs Interfaces, port
 Ingress PFE : Multicast towards queuing, packet
delay buffer access
other PFEs (volume depends on Generalized
the replication type)
PFE view
 Intermediate PFE : Multicast
towards other PFEs (volume
depends on the replication type)
 MQ/XM memory bandwidth
 Total traffic in plus total traffic out

WORST CASE SCENARIO

PFE All WAN egress traffic is

multicast and received
from fabric, plus
N x LU replicated back to other
PFEs (intermediate PFE
WAN Fabric role)

MQ/XM

All ingress multicast

is sent over fabric (no
local receivers)
Generalized
PFE view
Assuming symmetrical rate on the WAN side = X

MQ/XM fabric bandwidth limit : 2 * X (UNARY) or 4 * X (BINARY)

MQ/XM memory bandwidth limit : 5 * X (UNARY) or 7 * X (BINARY)
