Sports in which multiple players

are fielded and play on the court
or playing area, usually with
specific positions and roles to
perform.
I. DESCRIPTION

This unit deals with the basic forms,

movements, and fundamentals of the game
such as: receiving, setting, spiking, serving
and blocking. It also includes the playing
strategies, understanding of the rules, and
mastery of rolling and riving, which are very
essential in playing the game.
II. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students are expected to exhibit

competency in serving, receiving, setting, and spiking.
Specifically, they will be able to:
• be familiar with the standard dimension of the court,
facilities, and equipment;
• Learn the terminology used in Volleyball;
• Develop the fundamental skills through participation; and
• Develop desirable social attitude among students and towards
the game.

Brief History of Volleyball and its Development

The game of volleyball, originally called “mintonette,”

was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan after the
invention of basketball only four years before. Morgan,
a graduate of the Springfield College of the YMCA,
designed the game to be a combination of basketball,
baseball, tennis, and handball.
The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only
6’6″ high (though you need to remember that the
average American was shorter in the nineteenth
century).
The offensive style of setting and spiking was
first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916.
Over the years that followed, it became clear
that standard rules were needed for
tournament play, and thus the USVBA (United
States Volleyball Association) was formed in
1928.
The Court, Ball, Net, and other Supplies
Required
Volleyball is a fast-paced team sport with two
very distinct identities. Indoor and beach
volleyball are both played on a court. The
primary objective in both indoor and beach
volleyball is to prevent the ball from bouncing in
your team's half of the court while trying to
make it land in the other team's court.
The Ball

The type of ball required in volleyball depends on the

type and level of volleyball you play. Beach volleyballs
and indoor volleyballs vary in size, weight and
composition.
It's best if the ball is uniform, light in color or a
combination of colors. The air pressure in the ball
should be between 4.3 and 4.6 pounds per square
inch.
Net & Poles

The net divides the volleyball court into two halves.

The height of the net varies based on the age of the
players and the surface being played on. An indoor net
is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches in height for men and 7 feet 4
1/8 inches for women. and the poles from which they
are hung, protective padding is required to surround
these structures to ensure player safety in case of
collision.
A regulation net is 1 meter wide and 9.5 meters
long. It's constructed of 10 centimeter (4-inch)
square mesh.

The antennae on the net are flexible rods made

of fiberglass. They are 1.8 meters long and 10
millimeters in diameter.
Basic Volleyball Equipment Uniform and
Shorts
The uniform consists of a jersey plus shorts or briefs, pants, or
culottes.
With the exception of the libero, teammates must wear uniforms
of the same color, style, cut, and trim.
The libero wears a different color uniform and is the only player
on the team in this uniform.
Shoes, socks, and knee pads aren't considered to be part of the
uniform and aren't required to be identical.
Popular Gear for Competitive Volleyball

• Knee pads are an important part of the volleyball

uniform. In order to play volleyball aggressively, every
player needs to have the needs well protected.
• Knee pads are important for making athletic defensive
plays diving to the floor.
• There are also many serve receive and defensive
techniques that involve going to the knees. The knee
pads provide added support for performing such skills
as volleyball knee drops.
Fundamentals and Techniques of the Game

Passing

Passing is simply getting the ball to someone else on

your team after it’s been served or hit over the net by
the opposing team. It’s commonly thought of as the most
important skill in all of volleyball, because your team
can’t return the ball without a solid volleyball pass.
Forearm volleyball passes are often used to direct the
ball in a controlled manner to a teammate, but overhead
passing is another option.
Setting

The setter has the most important position on the

team, and is often the team leader for this reason.
It’s their job to make it easy for a teammate to get
the ball over the volleyball net, preferably with a
spike that the other team can’t return. The setting
motion gets the ball hanging in the air, ready to be
spiked by another teammate with force.
Spiking

A real crowd-pleaser, spiking is the act of

slamming the ball in a downward motion across
the volleyball net to the other team’s side of the
court. When done well, spiking is very difficult to
return, which is why it’s an essential skill. A
proper spike will help accumulate points quickly.
Blocking

Blocking is another important skill, although it’s

probably the most expendable of the fundamentals.
Still, it adds a great dimension to the game, keeping
the other team on their toes, so to speak. By timing it
right, you can jump up and deflect or block the
opponent’s attack before it even crosses the volleyball
net, which can take them by surprise and give your
team an easy point.
Serving

Our final fundamental skills is serving. How

can you be a great volleyball player without
knowing how to serve? There are a variety of
ways to serve, but you’ll most often see the
underhand or overhand serves.
ASSIGNMENT:

Give the Timeline

of Significant Volleyball
Events.
Take note: The paper that you will submit
should be computerized.
VOLLEYBALL

• Team sport played by two teams composed of six

players, each who use their hands to hit the ball
back and forth over the net before it touches the
ground.
• In this game, the players of each team can only
hit the ball for a maximum of three times before
sending it over the net to the opponent’s side.

the front row also called the attack area near the net, and
another three players at the back area, near the end line.
• A toss coin signals the start of the game. The team who win the
toss coin start the game by serving the ball behind the end
line, serving over the net to the opponent’s court.
• Only one attempt is allowed in a serve.
• The play will continue until the ball touches the ground or a
rule violation is committed.
BASIC RULES

• No player is allowed to hit the ball more than once in

succession.
• A player will keep on serving the ball as long as his or

• Clockwise rotation determines which player serve the
ball each time a teams wins back the serve.
• The first team score 15 points (traditional) or 25 points
(rally) wins the game.
VIOLATIONS OF THE GAME

• ILLEGAL SWITCHING
• CROSSING THE CENTER LINE
