SAFETY POLICY

A document stating the top management’s safety


objectives, the level of safety that can be performed
by the organization, and the responsibility of the
organization’s members for executing the policy
and ensuring safety.

• Be a statement of principles stating what, not, how;

• Promote consistency throughout the organization and across


projects;

• Provide an explanation to outsiders of how the organization

How to Start a Safety and Health Program ?
• Management Initiative and Leadership Top management assumes responsibility
for health and safety and takes the lead in starting a health and safety program
• Setting up the Staff Top management writes the company health and safety policy
and declares it through a meeting among the supervisory staff or through letters,
bulletins, and announcements. A health and safety policy should be brief but
should clearly define management attitude and desires.

Answer to the following must be clearly explained :


What does management want ?
Does the policy pertain to on – the job health and safety ? OFF– the – job health
and safety?
Property damage ? Fire ? Product safety ?
Who is to be responsible for what ?
Where and How is it fixed ?
How does it fir into the organization ?

Who has the right to correct and determine courses of action ?
What rules will the company live by ?

Outlining Policy and General Methods of
Procedure
A health and safety program is a definite plan action designed
to eliminate or manage hazards and prevent cases of
occupational disease.
Program will enable management to measure performance
against objectives, and to provide the framework for
employee participation; and a mechanism to identify the
need for change and to manage the change process.

Policy Statement
• Safety policy should be a clear statement of principles, which serve a s
guide to action. Management must be totally committed to ensuring
that the policy is carried out with no exceptions. No one policy is suitable
for all organizations. The policy statement can be brief, but it should
mention:
 The objectives
 The organization's basic health and safety philosopy.
 The general responsibilities of all employees.
 The ways employees can participate in health and safety
activities.
• The policy should be :
 Stated in clear and concise terms.
 Signed by the incumbent Chief Executive Officer.
