MOST OF THE PEOPLE ARE USING MOBILE PHONES IN THEIR EVERYDAY
LIFE. IN THEIR LIFE, MOBILE PHONE CAN BE A DISADVANTAGE OR AN ADVANTAGE TO THEM ESPECIALLY TO STUDENTS. ACCORDING TO THE EUROPEAN UNION’S IN-HOUSE STATISTICAL OFFICE, LUXEMBOURG (2006), THAT THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SUBSCRIBERS IN MOBILE PHONE IN THE WORLD WAS ESTIMATED AT 2.14 BILLION IN THE YEAR OF 2005. PEOPLE NOWADAYS HAVE MOBILE PHONES AND USE THEM FREQUENTLY. RECENT SURVEY FROM DECEMBER 2011 SHOWS THAT THERE ARE 337.6 M PHONE USERS IN THE U.S WHICH IMPLIES A PENETRATION RATE OF 104% ACROSS THE COUNTRY (CTIA, 2011). STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM • MOBILE PHONES BECAME A NECESSITY IN OUR SOCIETY REGARDLESS OF THE AGE OF THE PERSON. IN THIS GENERATION, EVERY STUDENTS HAVE THEIR OWN MOBILE PHONES. IT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE AN AFFECT ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PEROFORMANCE.THIS STUDY AIMS TO KNOW WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE USAGE OF MOBILE PHONES TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE • MOBILE PHONES ARE A HUGE ASSET WHEN IT IS USED PROPERLY AND FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES. MODERN TECHNOLOGY IS AFFECTING US IN MANY WAYS, IT MAY BE IN A POSITIVE IMPACT OR IN A NEGATIVE IMPACT. ONLINE-GAMES, IPODS AND MOBILE PHONES ARE NOW FIXTURES OF YOUTH CULTURE (UNICEF, 2011). • IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, MOBILE PHONES HAD BEEN PROVEN TO BE EFFECTIVE OR A MEANS OF TESTING STUDENT PERFORMANCE (WHATTANARONG, 2006) IMPORTANT LESSONS HAVE BEEN ADAPTED FROM EARLY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES WITH MOBILE PHONES (ATTEWELL, 2005; KUKULSKA-HUME & TRAXLER, 2005; STEAD, 2005) • THE MISUSE OF PHONES MAY LEAD TO CHEATING, AND THE INABILITY OF THE TEACHERS TO MONITOR THE USE OF CELLPHONES BY STUDENTS (RAFAEL, 2003) STUDENTS COULD NOT FOCUS IN THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE BECAUSE OF MOBILE PHONES. DISTRACTIONS LIKE THIS KIND OF TECHNOLOGY MIGHT DISCONNECT THEM TO THE REAL WORLD (LIVAZOVIC, 2011). • A LOT OF STUDENTS WERE CHEATING IN THEIR EXAMS. STUDENTS DO NOT EVEN REALIZE THAT THEIR PRIORITIES HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT BECAUSE OF THEIR INTERACTION IN MOBILE PHONES (SRIVASTRA, 2005). IT CAN BE A DISADVANTAGE IN A WAY THAT THEY CANNOT FOCUS IN THEIR STUDIES, ESPECIALLY IN ADOLESCENT STAGE THEY ARE EASY TO BE DISTRACTED EVEN IN THE LITTLE THINGS. METHODOLOGY • RESEARCH DESIGN - OUR STUDY WILL BE CONDUCTED AT THE COLEGIO DE SAN JUAN DE LETRAN. WE WILL BE TARGETING THE STUDENTS’ ESPECIALLY THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ALL THE STRAND HAVING THE AGE OF 16 TO 19 YEARS OLD. THIS STUDY WILL BE USING THE PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ARE THE EXPERIENCES THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE ENCOUNTERED WITH THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES IN THE LEVEL OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL OF COLEGIO DE SAN JUAN DE LETRAN. IF THE MOBILE PHONES OF THE STUDENTS’ ARE AFFECTING THEM POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY IN THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES. AFTER WE CONDUCT THE INTERVIEWS FOR THE STUDENTS. WE WILL ANALYZE THEIR ANSWERS AND FIND THE COMMON ANSWERS OF STUDENTS IF IT IS A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE EFFECT TO THEM, WHICH MAYBE CAN LEAD US INTO THE BEST RESULTS INTO OUR STUDY. • SAMPLING TECHNIQUE -THIS STUDY EMPLOYS A PURPOSIVE SAMPLING TECHNIQUE FOR THE CONDUCT OF AN IN-DEPTH INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEW WITH AN FOR ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS AMONG THE SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS. • RESEARCH INSTRUMENT -THIS RESEARCH STUDY WILL BE USING A QUESTIONNAIRE THAT IS COMPOSED OF FIVE (5) QUESTIONS THAT IS RELATED TO OUR GENERAL TOPIC. DATA PROCEDURE • TO OBTAIN THE DATA, THE RESEARCHER UNDERTAKES THE FOLLOWING: • A REQUEST LETTER WILL BE PREPARED FOR THE LETRAN RESEARCH CENTER, • WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE LETRAN RESEARCH CENTER, THROUGH THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, THE RESEARCHER WILL CONDUCT A MEETING WITH DIFFERENT STUDENTS INSIDE THE COLEGIO. • THE RESEARCHER WILL SELECT 20-40 SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BOTH MALE AND FEMALE THAT ARE AGED 16-19 WHO ARE CURRENTLY STUDYING AT COLEGIO DE SAN JUAN DE LETRAN. • THE RESEARCHER WILL GIVE A QUESTIONNAIRE TO THE SELECTED RESPONDENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY. • THE RESEARCHER WILL CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW WITH THE RESPONDENTS OF THIS STUDY. • THE PARTICIPANTS’ RESPONSES IN THE QUESTIONNAIRES WILL BE COLLATED, ANALYZED AND INTERPRETED USING APPROPRIATE DATA ANALYSIS TOOLS. DATA ANALYSIS • THIS STUDY IS USING DESCRIPTIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS. AFTER WE GATHERED THE ANSWERS OF THE RESPONDENTS, WE ANALYZED THEIR ANSWERS AND WE COME UP THAT MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS IS THAT THE MOBILE PHONE IS AFFECTING THEM BOTH POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY. NEGATIVE IN A WAY THAT MOBILE PHONES ARE DISTRACTING THEM THAT LEADS THEM TO BECOME LAZY. AND THE STUDENTS IS TEMPTED TO OPEN THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS JUST TO OVERCOME THEIR BOREDNESS. • WHILE ON THE OTHER HAND, IN A POSITIVE WAY, MOBILE PHONES CAN HELP THEM TO FIND SOME INFORMATIONS FASTER THAN FINDING AN INFORMATION IN A BOOK IN THE LIBARARY. Cellphones can be a huge help to students especially when they need advanced technology experience since technology is emerging in our generation now cellphones can give a lot of educational use. One of my personal experience is having an online quiz to every subject. Q#2 “Technology has vastly improved in the last decade. It has helped us in our everyday lives and it plays a big role in students’ lives especially to this generation. Mobile phones make life easier because it serves an instrument in doing tasks in a fast and accurate manner. When teachers ask us to research about a certain topic, we have quick access on the world wide web which helps us to cope up with the instructions given by the teacher.” THEME CATEGORY RESPONDENTS ANSWER Thematic Subordinate R#16. Q#3. “There are a lot of negative effects. For me, I get distracted a lot. As I have mentioned above, our professor allows us to use our mobile phones during her class, so we could see the materials she posted on our facebook group. But then I tend to cast my attention away from the actual reason of using my phone then diverts it to my other social media sites to entertain myself rather than listen to what is being discussed in front. Same with my classmates, they usually just pay attention to their own deeds than to listen to a classmate reporting in front.” THEME CATEGORY RESPONDENTS ANSWER Thematic Subordinate R#16. Q#3.1. “It is important to limit, because it is not always every time that we need it. It is a huge cause of distraction among us, yes, we use it academically, but we also like to take a break sometimes then eventually neglects the initial reason for using it anyway. Some people/students also do not care about their studies anymore if they have the latest model of mobile phones from the market. It's like they are so outdated with what is currently happening in the world when they get off their phones even for a single hour, it's just frustrating me. This also reduces their actual social interactions because they care more about their virtual identities and reputations than solve their actual and real problems. I am certainly not one of these humans, I don't want to be.” R#16 Q#4. “It will cause the students to revolt. Of course, first thing is that they would complain so much since it would be "so boring" if they do not have their phones with them. Also, I think it'll be a bad move DISCUSSION •AS WE HAVE TAKEN THE DATA FROM THE RESPONDENTS. THE RESULTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE AFFECT OF THE MOBILE PHONES IS BALANCED. IN A WAY THAT THE USAGE OF MOBILE PHONES HAVE NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE AFFECTS, MAJORITY OF THE RESPONDENTS STATES THAT MOBILE PHONES CAN HELP THEM TO THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION • THE PRIME AIM OF THE STUDY WAS TO UNDERSTAND THE PERCEPTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF MOBILE PHONE AS A EDUCATIONAL TOOLS AMONG STUDENTS. THE STUDY REVEALS THE IMPORTANCE OF MOBILE PHONE AS A MEANS OF SOCIALIZATION AND THE MULTIPLE COMPONENTS OF INFORMATION ON MOBILE INTERNET USAGE AMONG YOUNG MOBILE USERS. STUDENTS WILL INEVITABLY USE MOBILE PHONES, BOTH COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE (SUCH AS THE MICROSOFT OFFICE AND GOOGLE DRIVE SUITES) AND INSTITUTIONALLY SPECIFIC (SUCH AS THE LMS). MANY STUDENTS FEEL UNPREPARED TO USE INSTITUTIONALLY SPECIFIC TECHNOLOGY, AND SOME EVEN FEEL UNPREPARED TO USE COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE. REGARDLESS OF THE NUMBER OR SIZE OF ONLINE COURSES OR PROGRAMS AT AN INSTITUTION, TECHNOLOGY IS CRITICAL TO STUDENT SUCCESS, SO THIS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE AND CONFIDENCE IS A MAJOR POINT OF FAILURE FOR STUDENTS. RESEARCH STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT MOBILE PHONE HELP THE STUDENTS TO ACCESS FILES, DOCUMENTS, AND DISCUSSION ABOUT THE LESSON IN THE SCHOOL. SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF USING MOBILE PHONE IN THE STUDENTS IS TO LEARN MORE AND TO IMPROVE HIGHER LEARNING SKILLS.
