Introduction to IPA Function

 IP networking is flexible, reliable and easy for
maintenance.
 Easy to achieve Flex A
 AoIP can help to greatly reduce the cost.
 ZXG10 BSS R9 product supports the IPA function, which
is in compliance with the 3GPP protocol.

IPA Interface Protocol Stack

 iBSC IPA has two standards: 3GPP IPA and IPA of
China Mobile’s standard
 R8 supports IPA of China Mobile’s standard.
 R9 supports 3GPP IPA
 IPA of the two standards above are different at the
BSSAP layer.
 Protocol stack of the control plane:
BSC MSS
BSSAP BSSAP
SCCP SCCP
M3UA M3UA
SCTP SCTP
IP IP
MAC / PPP MAC / PPP

IPA Interface Protocol Stack

 The difference between China Mobile AoIP and 3GPP AoIP is in
the format of RTP data packet at the user plane.
 3GPP AoIP adopts the signaling procedure defined in the RTCP
protocol.
 IPA interface protocol stack of the user plane:

BSC MGW

IPA Networking Mode

IPA networking mode can be classified by two criterion
 Whether the interface address at iBSC is in the same subnet with that at
CN
 If they are in same subnet, only the switch is needed for networking,
and the router is unnecessary.
 If they are in different subnets, both the router and the switch are
needed.
 How the control plane and the user plane use the interfaces at BSC side:
1. The control plane and the user plane use different GIPI physical
interfaces configured with different IP addresses. They do not use
sub-interfaces.
2. The control plane and the user plane use the same GIPI physical
interface, different sub-interfaces configured with different IP
addresses.
3. control plane and the user plane use the same GIPI physical
interface configured with different IP addresses. They do not use sub-
interfaces.

 If the interface address of iBSC is not in the same subnet with
that of CN, it is necessary to add a router between them. The
following figure shows the networking mode.

Commissioning Preparations
 Determine IPA networking mode
 Work out a scheme to extract iBSC clock reference
 Determine interconnection data table
 Determine software version
 Make sure transmission cables are correctly connected
Internal use only▲

Preparations – clock mode in the IPA mode

 In the AoTDM mode, BSC needs the clock extracted

from TDM. In the AoIP mode, BSC cannot fetch clock
from the A interface. (iBSC does not support fetching
1588 clock from the A interface). Therefore, it is
necessary to consider clock synchronization scheme in
the AoIP mode.
 If there is 2MBITS clock input, it is suggested to use
2MBITS clock as the main clock source.
 If there is not any 2MBITS clock, at least 1 pair of E1
cables should be connected to CN in the AoTDM mode
to extract clock from CN (bearing no voice service)
 If iBSC has been configured with ICM (CLKG is not
supported), you can use the clock of GPS if possible.

 For the control plane, the service IP of iBSC can communicate
normally with the service IP of MSC.

Configure IPI Interface Address (1)

 For different physical
interfaces, create an
interface address for the
control plane and the user
plane each.
 For the same physical
interface, create an
interface address for
different IP addresses.
Select 2 for The number
of IP. Add IP and mask for
the control plane and the
user plane
 For the same physical
interface but different sub-
interfaces, create two sub-
interfaces. It is
unnecessary to create the
interface. See the printed
label for the MAC address.

Configure Virtual IP of iBSC

 Create virtual IP of
the control plane and
that of the user plane
 Set the mask as
255.255.255.255.
 For Board function
type of the control
plane, select SMP
for 3GPP IPA, and
RPU for China
Mobile’s IPA.
 For Board function
type of the control
plane, select RPU by
default.

Configure Static Route

 It is necessary to
configure a static route
when the interface
address at iBSC is not in
the same subnet with the
virtual address at CN.
 Static route prefix: type in
the IP address of the
destination subnet or
destination host. It is the
virtual IP of CN when IPA
is used.

type
 Type in the IP address of

 NRI of MSC: The value must be consistent with that set on CN. If
iBSC does not support FLEX A, it is unnecessary to configure the
parameter.
 Load allocate ratio of MSC: It defines load share ratio on multiple
MSCs. For example, if the parameter values are 2 and 3
respectively on two MSCs. They will share the load according to
the proportion of 2:3. If iBSC does not support FLEX A, it is
unnecessary to configure the parameter.
 Selected times: The parameter is related to multi-signaling
function. When the function is enabled, the parameter value
cannot be 0.
 A Interface Type: Full IP represents IP networking over the A
interface. PCM Over IP is not supported at present. PCM Over
TDM represents traditional TDM over the A interface.
