What do you mean by
discourse ?
Discourse
- isdefined by Concise Oxford
Dictionary.
-a conversation or talk
-a lecture or a sermon; discussion
-a dissertation of an academic subject
Discourse is about
language and communication.
LANGUAGE ???
Language
- is a system of communication
used by a particular country or
community.
COMMUNICATION???
Communication
- means imparting or exchanging
information or news.
(sending or receiving information)
DISCOURSE can be defined into
three different ways

1.Language above language


2.Language in use
3.Language as a form of social practice
1. Discourse can be said above
language because discourse, in
the most basic sense, is
linguistics.
What is Linguistics?
Linguistics
-it is the study of words and
combination of words to form a
meaning that is used in
communication.
LINGUIST
are people who study linguistics.
2. Whenever we communicate,
we use language,
whether it is written, heard or spoken.

In this scenario, we can say that


discourse is when language is used.
 Writing
is a form of discourse because it gives
you the avenue to express your
emotions through the use of written
context.
-it gives information to the reader
3. Discourse as a form of social practice
conveys the idea as what has been said
in the previous two definitions of
discourse.
Discourse
is a medium of communication that
promotes social interaction.
Think of this ???
While you are asking the girl at the
cashier about the sale last Thursday.
“You are already interacting through
the use of spoken language”.
While you are reading a newspaper
that tells you the weather for today, it
is also a form of social practice
Why ???
Because it gives you the ability to get
informed and be aware of the ideas of
others or the author.
