COMPUTER

Is a machine that helps us make our work easier.

The word computer came from the word compute, means “to count”
or “get the total number.”
Is an electronic device/machine that can store and work with large
amounts of information.

A computer can also be used to:

Type letters and numbers.
Put your work into paper.
Remember information.
How does a computer work?
A computer needs to go through a process called Data-processing
Cycle.

Steps in Data Processing:

1. Collection of data – this is the first step in Data-processing Cycle
(DPC), of which we get all the data needed for processing.
2. Input – all collected data are “entered” into the computer.
3. Processing – the computer arranges or “processes” all data
entered into it. In this step, data becomes information that we can
use.
4. Output – the processed data is shown or is “the result”/
5. Storage – means “space for keeping something”. In this step, the
processed data are stored for future use.
Elements of the Computer System
The computer is a system.
It has parts that work together as one. It is made up of three
elements which are very important, for this make the computer
work or function well.

Three Elements of the Computer System:

1. Hardware – parts of the computer that can be touched or hold.
examples: monitor, keyboard, system unit; mouse
2. Software – this is the programs installed in the computer. This is
important because the computer cannot run without it.
examples: windows operating system; pc games; MS Office
3. Peopleware – are what we call the persons who work with
computers.
ex.: computer engineer, programmers, computer
teachers
BASIC PARTS OF A
COMPUTER
MONITOR
MONITOR
It produces an on-screen display of the information
needed by the computer user.
You can read letters, look at pictures, watch movies and
see distant places in the computer.

It usually comprises the display device, circuitry, casing

and power supply. The display device in modern
monitors is typically a thin film transistor liquid crystal
display (TFT-LCD) or a flat panel LED display, while older
monitors used a cathode ray tubes (CRT).
SYSTEM UNIT OR
COMPUTER CASING
SYSTEM UNIT OR COMPUTER CASING

It is the box casing that contains the electronic devices of

the computer

It houses the Central Processing Unit, Hard Disk,

Modems, Memory, Disk Drives and Various Adapters.
CENTRAL PROCESSING
UNIT (CPU)
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)

It symbolizes the brain of the computer. It is the

main part of a computer.
KEYBOARD
KEYBOARD
It is a panel of keys that operate a computer or the
typewriter-like device that you see connected to the
system unit.
It allows the user to ender data into the computer
MOUSE
MOUSE

A computer mouse is an input device that is most often

used with a personal computer. Moving a mouse along a
flat surface can move the on-screen cursor to different
items on the screen. The mouse allows the user to easily
and quickly move the pointer to its desired location by
pressing the mouse buttons (called clicking).
• The mouse allows you to use Windows easily.
• Five mouse actions when using Windows:
• 1. Pointing – is done by placing the tip of the mouse pointer
over an object you want to select.
• 2. Clicking – done by pressing the left button once.
• 3. Double-clicking – done by pressing the left
button twice. Allows you to open a program or file.
• 4. Dragging – allows you to move an object from one place
of the screen to another.
• 5. Right-clicking – done by pressing the right button one.
SPEAKER
SPEAKER
It receives audio input from the computers’ sound
card and produce audio output in the form of sound
waves.

Most computer speakers are active speaker, meaning,

it have an internal amplifier which allows you to
increase the volume or amplitude of the sound
HEADSET
HEADSET

Is a device that holds an earphone in place on a person’s

head.
DISK DRIVE
DISK DRIVE

It is somewhat lie a tape recorder.

It enables one to “record” or save on a disk the
information one needs.
PRINTER
PRINTER

Is a machine used to transfer text or images to

paper.
A device made by Canon or HP that you hook up
to your computer and that uses ink to put
images from your computer onto paper.
UPS / AVR
AVR – Automatic Voltage Regulation

A hardware device used to maintain a voltage to

electronic devices

UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply

Device that allows a computer to keep running for at
least a short time when the primary power source is
lost. It also provides protection from power surges
