Scope of presentation…
Shells
- Introduction
- Membrane action
- Application
- stiffened shells

Review of Literature

Work done

Ascertaining scope of work and tentative finalization of way ahead for M-Tech
project

2
Shell Structures
 Structures which resist applied
external loads due to membrane
action.

 Membrane action gives rise to in-

plane forces only and this makes
entire cross section effective.

 An effective alternative to plates

where large span is required.

Stiffening in Shells

To prevent buckling

and overall collapse of
the shell Combination of circumferential
and axial stiffeners Axial Stiffeners

To enable reduction in

thickness of the shell
plating and hence
economy

Ring Stiffeners

Work Done so far….

• Review of Literature for analysis of shell theories

• Study of buckling modes of ring stiffened cylinders under

hydrostatic loads

• Study of design optimization for deep submerged pressure hull

• Finalisation of scope and way ahead for undertaking major

project

Development of shell Development of shell theories depend on

theories depend on the the extent to which elasticity equations
extent to which elasticity could be simplified.

Design Optimization of pressure hull
• Design variables- Number and • Advantages of optimization:
thickness of ring stiffeners, shell
radius and its thickness, depth of
ring stiffeners - Reduction in structural
weight
• Objective function- Minimization of
structural weight
- Increase in operating speed
thus reducing vulnerability
• Design constraints:
- Compatibility of deformation
- Material strength constraints
- Better utilization of internal
space
- Local buckling constraints
- Ring crippling constraints
- Overall buckling constraints - Increased payload 11
Finalisation of scope and way ahead…
• Analyze portion of the pressure hull of submarine with different
types of stiffening for large hydrostatic loads and blast loads
from explosion of underwater mines.

• Study various modes of buckling of the structure and carry out

post buckling analysis.

• Design the pressure hull of the submarine for above loads and
optimize the same for maximum payload and operating speed.

• Verification of the above results through a FEM software.
