• Not an easy task especially young learners.

• According to National Reading Panel (NRP 2000)


concluded that systematic phonics instruction
enhance children’s success in learning to read.

• Systematic instruction and good strategies is required


including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,
vocabulary and reading comprehension.
• In 2012, 52.5% Malaysian students has failed
to achieve level 2 of literacy .

 Phonics involves the relationship between
sounds and written symbols.

 It is not a method for teaching children to read.


It is a tool, a knowledge set that enable
children to understand the alphabetic nature
of writing system.

 Hence, phonics facilitates young readers’


efforts to both READ and SPELL.
• The objectives of this paper are:
a. To identify the intervention strategy to help
young learners (Level 1: Year 1, 2 & 3) to read
with accuracy.
b. To find out the effectiveness of phonemic
awareness program in school to be further apply
by teachers.
