HEREDITY

Inheritance and
Variation
ACTIVITY 1
DNA vs. RNA
DNA & RNA
Looking carefully in the individual parts of DNA
and RNA, how are these two connected?
The DNA Structure
(Deoxyribonucleic
Acid)

DNA is the genetic

material that
organisms inherit from
their parents.
Characteristics:

Number of Strands:
Two; DNA are
double-stranded
Characteristics:

Location in the Cell:

Within the cell’s
nucleus
Characteristics:

Type of Sugar:
Deoxyribose
Characteristics:
Nitrogenous Base
Pairs:
Cytosine Guanine
(C) (G)
Adenine Thymine
(A) (T)
The RNA Structure
(Ribonucleic Acid)

RNA is an intermediate
molecule involved in the
transfer of information
from genes to make
proteins.
Characteristics:

Number of Strands:
Single; RNA are
single stranded
Characteristics:

Location in the Cell:

Cytoplasm
Characteristics:

Type of Sugar:
Ribose
Characteristics:
Nitrogenous Base
Pairs:
Cytosine Guanine
(C) (G)
Adenine Uracil
(A) (U)

Guide Question:
1. Examine the two double-stranded DNA
molecules. Are they identical or different in
any way?
The two double-stranded DNA molecules
are identical in terms of similar process of
pairing wherein Adenine binds with
Thymine, while Guanine binds with
Cytosine.
Guide Question:
2. If you were asked to replicate each of the two
DNA molecules on your table to create four
identical DNA molecules, how would you go
about doing this?
Correct pairing of each nucleotides
wherein Adenine must be paired with
Thymine and Guanine and Cytosine.
Guide Question:
3. You now have two copies of the segment of the hGH
gene on your table. During periods of growth and cell
division, the chromosomes, which are made up of genes,
must divide. What features about DNA replication causes
each new DNA molecules to be exactly like the original?
The DNA replication is known as semi-
conservative replication, since one of the
old strand is conserved in each new
molecule and also the specificity of base
pairing with each nucleotide.
