HOW TO MAKE A EFFECTIVE

PRESENTATION

MAKING ORAL PRESENTATION

Many courses students are asked to


make individual or group presentations.
Employers want to recruit graduates
with good verbal skills.
 Some jobs require you to make oral
presentations, others may not but they do
require the same verbal communication
skills.
Objective of this Presentation
 Improve your presentation skills--
presenting information, arguing a
case, persuading, negotiating,
explaining
Combating Nerves
 Rehearse in advance
 Remind yourself that everybody feels
nervous.
 Ask what is the worst thing that could
happen and prepare for it.
 Try to relax.
 Use visual aid
 Have effective speaker’s notes.

 Who will your audience be?
 What will they expect or need?
 How many will there be?
 What are the characteristic of your
particular audience?

 20 minutes
 If longer than 20 minutes, break it up
with different sort of activities.
 Allow time at the beginning for people
to settle
 Allow time for questions
 If a group presentation, divide the
time between the presenters

back can hear you

look at the LCD

Dealing with Questions
 Check that you understand the
question
 It is better to admit ignorance than to
waffle
 You can pass the question back to the
questioner or to others. This can
generate discussion
 In a presentation, have someone
chairing questions.
Delivering a group Presentation
 Each person presents the topic they
have covered
 One person acts as narrator and
others contribute as needed
 Each person has a specific
task/responsibility (showing visual
aids, dealing with questions,
reporting findings etc)
