REMEMBER ME…

• Solute dissolves at different rate.

• Stirring, heating and powdering
will dissolve solute faster.
• Miscible liquids mix totally while
immiscible liquid don’t.
ANSWER OBSERVATION QUESTIONS
DISSOLVING SOLUTES (1-5) ON YOUR MANIL A PAPER.
• Experiment No. 2 Ways of Dissolving Substances
PROCEDURES:
1. Prepare materials needed.
2. Label the cups with (A hot) (B cold) (C powdered) (D bar)
3. Fill cup A with half filled hot water. Cup B with half filled cold water
4. Add 1 spoon of brown sugar in each cup A and B. DO NOT STIR observe which will dissolve
faster.
5. Half fill cup C and D with tap water (from c.r.)
6. Add 1 spoon detergent powder to cup C and cut a small part of detergent bar in cup D
7. Stir cup C and cup D. observe which will dissolve faster.
OBSERVATIONS:
1. What are the materials needed?
2. In which cup did the sugar dissolved faster? Explain why.
3. What did you do to dissolve the sugar in cold water?
4. Which is more soluble? bar soap or detergent powder? Why?
5. CONCLUSION: how do you dissolve substances faster?
SOLUBILIT Y:
FACTORS AFFECTING SOLUBILIT Y
• Solution is formed by the combination of
solute and solvent.

•Solvent- The one that dissolves the

substance (solute).
•Solute – Usually solid and always
dissolved by the solvent. The unobservable
part of solution
LET’S TRY THIS! 
Encircle the solute and Box the
solvent in the following examples.

Salt and Vinegar

Powdered juice and water

Tamarind mix and hot water

Carbon dioxide in soft drinks

• No! solute dissolves
at different or speed Does all solute
depending on its
composition and dissolve at the
the process of same rate?
dissolving.
Can you give an
example?
WHICH DISSOLVES FASTER? Rank them
according to solubility with 1 as the
fastest
• Powdered milk 2
• Detergent bar 5
• Piece of biscuit 4
• Laundry detergent 3
• Iodized salt 1
Solute can be
classified What is
according to solubility?
The ability of solute
their solubility to dissolve in a given
amount of solvent
TYPES OF SOLUTE
• SOLUBLE– substance that easily dissolves in
solvent.
Ex: sugar, powdered juice
• INSOLUBLE – substance which do not
dissolves in solvent.
EX: coins, metal
• MISCIBLE – when 2 liquids mix
EX: alcohol and water
• IMMISCIBLE – when 2 liquids do not mix
EX: gasoline and water
SOLUBLE OR INSOLUBLE
• Ana mixes some sand into cold water.
• She added some grape seeds into soy
sauce mixture

MISCIBLE OR IMMISCIBLE
Condensed milk and water
Vinegar and Oil honey and water
WAYS TO DISSOLVE FASTER
•Stirring – dissolving
substance though
mechanical force. The
faster the mixing, the
faster it dissolves.
WAYS TO DISSOLVE FASTER
•Heating – hot water has molecules
that moves rapidly having contact
with solutes.
WAYS TO DISSOLVE FASTER
•Powdering –
making particles
smaller makes
them dissolve
faster.
WHAT DOES THEIR MOLECULES
LOOK LIKE?
TYPES OF SOLUTE
• MISCIBLE – when 2 liquids mix
EX: alcohol and water

• IMMISCIBLE – when 2 liquids do not mix

EX: gasoline and water
SOLUBLE OR INSOLUBLE
• Pepper
• Flour
• Tamarind mix
• Cereals
• Medicine tablet

MISCIBLE OR IMMISCIBLE
Evaporated milk and water
Dishwashing liquid and oil
THINGS TO BRING TOMORROW
BY GROUP
• Marker and cartolina
• Basahang bilog and newspaper
• Brown sugar
• Plastic spoon
• Plastic bag
• 6 clear plastic cup Detergent Bar
Detergent Powder
• Oil, dishwashing liquid and red food color
EXPERIMENT TIME!
THINGS TO DO
• Choose a leader who will lead the
experiment.
• Assign a group secretary who will record
the data and results of the experiment
• Assign 3 cleaners from your group who
will clean up your area.
• Experiment No. 2 Ways of Dissolving Substances
PROCEDURES:
1. Prepare materials needed. DISSOLVING SOLUTES
2. Label the cups with (A hot) (B cold) (C powder) (D bar) (E liquid)
3. Fill Cup A with hot water. Cup B with cold water. Cup C,D,E with tap water (from c.r.)
4. Add 1 spoon of brown sugar in cup A,B. STIR BOTH observe which will
dissolve faster.
5. Add 1 spoon detergent powder to cup C and cut small slice of detergent bar in cup D
6. Stir cup C and cup D. observe which will dissolve faster.
7. Add dishwashing liquid and oil
OBSERVATIONS:
1. What are the materials needed?
2. In which cup did the sugar dissolved faster? Explain why.
3. Which is more soluble? bar soap or detergent powder? Why?
4. Did the substances in cup E mix? What kind of solution is in cup E?
5. CONCLUSION: how do you dissolve substances faster?
