Objectives:
• Build an understanding of the cultural and societal development of the United States
A. Describe Historical Milestones that led to the creation of limited government in the
Untied States such as the Declaration of Independence (1776), Articles of
Confederation (1781), state constitutions and their charters, United States
Constitution (1787), and the Bill of Rights (1791).
B. Analyze important events and people responsible about bringing about political
changes in the United States.
THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
• A strong national government took over decade in a half to be established, the fear of a
strong national government with limitless authority was too great to be ignored by
regular citizens who saw this as a preamble to the tyranny they escaped from Europe.
• Key figures such as James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin were
instrumental in ratifying and championing a strong central government with prohibitions
to its power, while protecting individual rights.
• Previous drafts of rule were introduced and scraped for better ideas and required many
mistakes and blunders in order to create a more ideal rule of law.
