Proportion
OBJECTIVES
Compute for the point estimate of the
population proportion.
Compute for the confidence interval estimate of
the population proportion.
p
SAMPLE PROPORTION
Is the point estimate of the population proportion p.
Can be calculated as long as the number of elements
x in the sample having the same characteristics and
the size of the sample are known.
statistic
where
p = sample proportion
x = number of elements in the sample
having the same characteristics
n = sample size
EXAMPLE
In a random sample of 120 teachers, 48 of them
have master’s degrees. Find the value of p.
Given: Sol’n:
x = 48 p=x/n
n = 120 = 48/120
= 0.40
EXAMPLE
Out of the 150 randomly selected people in the mall,
45 of them where students. Compute the sample
proportion.
Given: Sol’n:
x = 45 p=x/n
n = 150 = 45/150
=0.30
