LISTENING

PART OF UNIT 4
LISTENING
• Listening is closely linked with perception, for
while we use the ear for listening, it is really in
the mind that the message is perceived.
• It is the mind that decides whether we should
listen attentively, half attentively, critically or with
concentration.
• When we listen, we pay conscious attention to
what is being said.
LISTENING
Types of Listening:
1. Superficial/Marginal Listening:
• In this type of listening the listener has little
awareness about the content of what is
being said.
• The output in type of listening is zero
because the listener tends to ignore the
message, and is not able to concentrate on the
theme.
LISTENING
2. Appreciative Listening:
• The main purpose of this type of listening is to
get enjoyment and pleasure.
• Examples include listening to recordings of
songs, entertaining jokes, etc.
3. Focused/Selective Listening:
• It involves listening for specific information.
• The main purpose is to get some specific
information that might be used to take a
decision.
LISTENING
• Examples include listening to the news, railway
and airport announcements.
4. Critical/Evaluative Listening:
• It includes evaluation of the oral message and
developing a line of thought.
• The listener analyses what he or she listens
to in order to understand the meaning of the
message.
• Examples include listening to lectures, seminars,
presentations, etc.
LISTENING
5. Informational/Attentive Listening:
• It demands the complete attention of the listener.
• It is basically active and intelligent listening in
situations such as group discussions, meetings,
job interviews, and so on.
• The listener pays attention to the message.
6. Empathetic/Therapeutic Listening:
• It is listening not only to what the speaker is saying
but also how he/she is saying i.e. his/her feelings,
emotions, and state of mind.
TYPES OF LISTENING
1. Active Listening
2. Passive Listening
1. Active Listening:
• This form of listening refers to hearing
something with the intention of not only
listening to understand to what is being said,
but to also provide feedback for the same.
• It is a two-way process where a person listens
to understand and asks doubts or provides
feedback wherever needed.
TYPES OF LISTENING
• In active listening, a person listens to what is
being spoken about not merely as a subject, but
to get an understanding of what the message
means.
• Other than listening, this process also involves
providing feedback wherever it facilitates better
understanding of the message.
• Thus, a person may ask questions in order to
get answers to the doubts he has, thus making
his understanding better.
TYPES OF LISTENING
2. Passive Listening:
• This form of listening refers to hearing
something without the intention of
responding to it.
• It also involves not carrying forth any other
activity while listening to the other person, i.e.,
not responding to what is being said.
• In passive listening, it is quite possible that our
mind may drift from the topic of discussion
from time to time.
TYPES OF LISTENING
• Passive listening is a one-way form of
communication, wherein there is no exchange
involved with the two parties.

Examples: Common examples of this form of
listening involve, watching TV, or listening to the
radio.
