How to begin to see beyond ourselves:
1. Empathizing – placing ourselves in someone else’s shoes
and to appreciate why he feels the way he does.

2. Changing our lenses – we have acquired certain ways

in which we see ourselves and others. The lenses that we
use are usually outdated ones that have been around
since our childhood. Before we can relate to other
cultures, we have to first change the way we view them.
3. Managing our toxic emotions – dealing with issues
of diversity can bring about toxic emotional diversity
can bring about toxic emotional response that
range from anger and hate to contempt and
disgust. These emotions decrease our chances of
building effective bridges with people of other
races. When we allow our own insecurities and
feelings of being accused or abused to surface,
communication stops. Being able to suppress the
impulse to get back at someone, defend our beliefs
and maintains our level of thinking are worthy skills.
4. Taking a risk – all of the diversity training and cross –
cultural communication skills will not build better
relationships between different cultures unless we take
the risk and get to know one another up close.
