What is a Dependent Clause?

Definition

Dependent Clause

• A dependent clause also called a subordinate clause or relative clause

• It cannot stand alone as a sentence by itself. It must be combined with


one or more independent clauses to form a sentence.

• Dependent clauses can function as adjective clause, noun clause, or


adverb clause in a sentence.

Ex : When my mother cooks soup, my dog barks loudly

Identifying clause

• It is not set off by commas as it gives the


information that is necessary for the reader to
identify the noun it modifies.
• It has to be spesific, you’re pointing to this noun
and you’re telling me what it is, or who it is, or
where it is.

Ex :
• I met a girl whose hair was blue
• Jerry went to the same store where Jenny bought her
couch
Non- Identifying

This clause is nonessential because the


information in the clause doesn't restrict or
limit the noun it modifies.

The commas signify that the adjective clause


provides, added not essential
information. Therefore, it is set off by
commas.

Example :
My high school English teacher, who is retired and now lives in Florida, sent me a postcard
Dr. Smith, who lives next door, is a retired surgeon

 A noun clause usually begins with a relative

• He knows that he must study.
• Max is not aware that she is missing her ring.

Example :
• Josephine is not responsible for what Alex decided to do.
• The cat hid behind whatever counter held his treats.

 Subject Complement
A subject complement will always
modify, describe, or complete the
subject of a clause.

Example :
• The problem is that you never think before
you speak.
• My command is what ever you wish.

verb.
• Dependent Clause which is used as adverbs, so
they describe verbs, adjectives, or adverbs.
• Answer questions like: How? When? Why? Where?
• Begin with a subordinate conjunction.
