A case study
of inclusive
practices in schools
and classes
8
• Rachel is happy to be in school. She is a 7 year old girl
very happy, sociable, curious, collaborative and above
all applied. She is the youngest of three brothers and
lives with her parents in the city of Santo Domingo. Her
teachers assure that she has demonstrated a great
capacity for learning and that, despite having special
physical needs, she has maintained the same level of
progress as her other 35 classmates.
• The girl can not listen, but little by little she improves the
verbal and gestural language. Since childhood, her
parents encouraged her and taught her how to
communicate. They never saw their special condition as
an impediment to develop and integrate into society.
Even her classmates are not aware that she is deaf,
they only know that they should communicate with her
in a special way, but this does not constitute a barrier to
it.
• "For this you have to follow a method, make a conscious
effort, work a group of new words per day, but maybe
not all parents have that will," explains Segundo Marte,
Rachel's father when talking about how important it has
been. the accompaniment in the education of her
daughter for her learning. 9
