RECYCLING EFFORTS IN

SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT
A Study in Kathmandu
Background

 Waste: any substance which has been discarded after its primary use, or is
worthless, defective and of no use.
 They are classified as:
 Solid wastes : Paper, plastics, glass, etc
 Liquid wastes : Chemicals, hot water, solvents, etc.
 Gaseous waste : Flue gases, NOx, SOx, Cox other combustion by products all
come under gaseous wastes.
 Biological waste : Kitchen Wastes, Agricultural wastes, Hospital Wastes,
pathological wastes, etc.
 Nuclear Wastes : radioactive mass leftover after a nuclear reaction.
Principles of Solid Waste Management

 Solid waste management can principally be explained using the five R’s of
solid waste management.
Waste Hierarchy Technique

Follows priorities for efficient use of resources:

 Avoidance including action to reduce the amount of waste generated by
households, industry and all levels of government
 Resource recovery including re-use, recycling, reprocessing and energy
recovery, consistent with the most efficient use of the recovered resources
 Disposal including management of all disposal options in the most
environmentally responsible manner.

Solid Waste Characteristics

 Compostion and Properties

 All nonhazardous solid waste from a community that requires collection and
transport to a processing or disposal site is called refuse or municipal solid waste
(MSW).
 Construction and demolition (C&D) waste (or debris) is a significant component of
total solid waste although it is not considered to be part of the MSW stream.
 E-waste is the fastest growing component in solid waste.

Doko Recyclers

 A green startup that prioritizes solid waste-collection services for rigorous

management of household waste.
 Acts as an intermediary between household and recycling companies
Working of Doko Recyclers

 Collection
Waste is collected by the Doko agent and transported to
the MRF.
 Segregation
Waste is separated into three main categories: Glass,
Plastic, Paper
 Sales to respective recycling factories
The different waste collections are forwarded to recycling facilities.
Classification of Waste Collected by
Doko Recyclers
 Paper
 Plastics
 Glass
 Metal
 E-waste
Waste Classification For Doco Recyclers

 Waste ClassificationFor
Impact of Doco Recyclers
 Preserve Natural Resoures
 Recycled glass uses about 21% less energy.
 Recycled plastic bottles use 76% less energy.
 Recycled newsprint uses about 45% less energy.

 Create Jobs and help economy

 Recycling generates more revenue and jobs than simply discarding waste in landfill
disposals.
 Clean water and neighborhoods contribute to good health.

 Protect Environment
 Save trees and keep the environment lush and green.
 Protect the ecosystem in our rivers, lakes and streams.
 Keep the air clean for all living beings
