Bourdon Tube
• Bourdon tube are primary sensing elements
• It mean they measure pressure at primary stage.
• Bourdon tube are made up of elastic material such as brass, alloy
steel, stainless steel , bronze , phosphor bronze , beryllium copper ,
monal etc .
• phosphor bronze is used in low pressure applications.
• It is made of elastic type that converts the pressure into mechanical
displacement which later convert it to electrical signal using electrical
transducers.
Principle Of Working
• The fluid whose pressure is to be measured is made to press the
pressure sensitive element and since the element is an elastic
member, deflects causing a mechanical displacement.
• The displacement is directly proportional to pressure applied.
• The displacement is measured with the help of electrical transducer.
• The output of electrical transducer is directly proportional to the
displacement and hence to the applied pressure.

Types with respect to shapes
With respect to there shape they are of 3 types
• C shape
• Spiral
• Helix
Construction
• Made up of an elliptically flatten tube bent in such a way so as to
produce different shapes.
• One end of the tube is sealed and other end is open for the fluid to
enter.
• The relation between displacement and pressure is non linear it is
made linear by attaching mechanical linkage.
• It accuracy varies from 0.5 to 2%.
• Tube is oval in section formed into an arc of 250.

scale
• The relation between displacement and pressure is
Advantages
• Low cost
• Simple construction
• High pressure range
• Good accuracy
• Improved design at the pressure for maximum safety
• Easily adapted for designs for obtaining electrical output
Disadvantages
• Limits for precision measurements
• Susciptible to shock and vibration and results to hystrersis.
Applications:
• It is used for local indication but it is also used for pressure
application and control application.
• The bourdon tube is used in analog pressure meter.
• It is used in many hydraulic systems.
• It is used in foot pump to in indicate pressure developed.
