Factors That Influence

Grade 11 Students in
Choosing Their Strands
Chapter 1: Background
of the Study
The K-12 program covers Kindergarten
and 12 years of basic education (six years
in elementary, four years of Junior High
School, and two years of Senior High
School [SHS] ) to provide sufficient time for
mastery of concepts and skills, develop
lifelong learners, middle-level skills
development, employment, and
entrepreneurship
 Each student in Senior High School can choose
among 3 tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood; and sports and arts. The academic
track includes 3 strands; Accountancy Business
Management (ABM); Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS); Science and Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics (STEM).

 Many factors affect career choices of high school

students. Identifying these factors would give
parents, educators, and industry an idea as to
where students place most of their trust in career
selection process (Super, 2010).
 In taking a course, one of the life’s major
decision is being made. In choosing a junior,
senior academic track, student should take a
risk. A student will choose a course which
he/she will study throughout college years and
decision making (Boyer 2014).

 Choosing a career path can help you in

developing a strategy for getting where you
want to be. In selecting an appropriate career
path involves making an honest self-evaluation
of your talents, skills, and interest.
 In Vietnam, teenagers struggles encountered in
choosing their strands/tracks depend on their parent’s
choice (Neslihan Bolat Hatice Odac, 2017). This study
pointed that, close-knitted relationship is considered as
one of the influential in making their decisions.
 In Philippines, one of the struggles that students
encountered in choosing their strands is that they are
forced to choose a strand. There decisions depend on
what they parents want them to take. Some of them
also chose on their own (Academia.edu).
 This study aims to know the struggles encountered by
Grade 11 students in choosing their strand.
