Factual Saying

“If You Think Safety Is Expensive, Try An

Accident”
“Better safe than sorry”

Industrial safety is important as it safeguards human

life especially in high risk areas such as nuclear,
chemical, oil and gas, and mining industries
Introduction
Safety
The protection of people from physical injury.
Health
Protection of the bodies and minds of people from illness resulting
from the materials, processes or procedures used
in the workplace.
Welfare
The provision of facilities to maintain the health and wellbeing of
individuals at the workplace. (drinking water, first aid, room
conditioning etc.)
Accident
An accident can be described as an unplanned and
undesirable event or action that results in undesired
consequences, e.g. injury, ill health, damage to the environment,
damage to or loss of property, plant and materials.
Incident
An incident is the sequence of events or actions that
produces that accident. All accidents are incidents. However the
definition of an incident is wider in that it also includes
dangerous occurrences and near misses.
Near Miss
Is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, or damage but had the
potential to do so. Only a fortunate break in the chain of events prevented an injury,
fatality or damage.

Hazard
The intrinsic property or ability of some thing ( work material, equipment, work
methods, and practices) with the potential to cause harm.
“Potential to cause harm or damage”
The key word is potential. Not all hazards will cause harm all of the time it depends
upon circumstances.
Typical work place hazard include:
• Work at height
• Process hazards
• Machinery
• Poor lighting
• Chemicals
Risk
Risk is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience
an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard. It may also apply to situations
with property or equipment loss.
Probability to getting harm is risk.
A risk is the “likelihood of harm occurring or frequency of harm occurring”
The degree of risk is based both on likelihood and severity of outcome (type
of injury and numbers involved etc.)
For example falling in workshop equipment's
Adverse health effects include:
 Bodily injury
 Disease (skin cancer, lungs disease,)
 Decrease in life span,
 Change in mental condition resulting from stress, traumatic
Experiences, exposure to solvents, and so on.
 Effects on the ability to accommodate additional stress
