Drill and Review

Properties of gases
Direction :Determine the following if it is a property of a gas. Write YES if
it is and NO if is not.

1. Has definite shape and volume. NO

2. Scattered molecules. YES
3. It has no definite shape and volume. YES
4. It has definite volume but no definite shape. NO
5. Mostly invisible YES
ACTIVITY NO. 1

Rubbing of two hands

(investigating
relationship)
Guide questions:

1.When you rub your two hands slowly what did you feel?

2. When you rub your two hands faster what did you feel?

3. Can you formulate relationship based on the activity you perform?

Statement of the Aim

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

a. describe the relationship between temperature and pressure;

b. calculate problems of unknown temperature and pressure using Gay-

Lussac’s Law and;

c. give practical application of Gay-Lussac’s Law in everyday living.

Clearance of difficulty:

Pressure- force per unit area

The effect of a force applied to a surface—is a derived

unit, obtained from combining base units. The unit of pressure
in the SI system is the pascal (Pa), defined as a force of one
Newton per square meter. The conversion between atm, Pa,
and torr is as follows: 1 atm = 101325 Pa = 760 torr

𝑃𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒 =

Volume = is the quantity of three-dimensional space occupied
by a liquid, solid, or gas. Common units used to express
volume include liters, cubic meters, gallons, milliliters,
teaspoons and ounces.

Temperature = the degree of hotness or coldness of a body

or environment.
Gay-Lussac’s Law
Gay-Lussac’s Law-it was formulated by Joseph Louis Gay-
Lussac.

This law states that at the constant volume of a gas, the

pressure of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature.

This means that when the temperature increases

the pressure also increases.
Gay-Lussac’s Law can be expressed mathematically as
P α T at constant Volume For the initial
condition; k= P1/T1
It is can be written as:
𝑷 For the final
k= P2/T2
P = kT or 𝒌= condition;
𝑻
Since there is a direct proportionality
Any change in the value of between the pressure and temperature of
pressure and temperature, gas at the constant volume. We can derive
we can have: the equation to this Formula;

Initial condition P1/T1 = P2/T2 Final condition

Let’s apply the Gay-Lussac’s Law in problem solving
using the final formula;
The pressure of a nitrogen gas inside a rigid tank is 1.5 atmosphere
(atm) at 30 0C. What will be the resulting pressure if the tank is
cooled to 00C?
Given
Initial condition; Final condition;

P1= 1.50 atm P2= ? UNKNOWN

T1= 300C T2= 00C

K= 0C + 273 K= 0C + 273
K = 30 + 273 = 303K K = 0 + 273 = 273K
SOLUTION
The pressure of a nitrogen gas inside a rigid tank is 1.5 atmosphere
(atm) at 30 0C. What will be the resulting pressure if the tank is
cooled to 00C?

P1/T1 = P2/T2

ACTIVITY NO. 2
PROBLEM SOLVING
Solve the following problems

1.A certain light bulb containing argon has a pressure of 1.20

atm at 180C. If it will be heated to 850C at constant volume,
what will be the resulting pressure?

2. At 200C a confined ammonia gas has a pressure of 2.50

atm. At what temperature would its pressure be equal to 45
atm?
ACTIVITY NO. 3
 How can you apply Gay-Lussac’s Law in
your daily life? Write at least 3 down
activities that you always do that apply
Gay-Lussac’s Law?
Assessment
I. Direction: Solve the following problems. 5 pts each
1.The helium tank has a pressure of 650 torr at 250C. What will be
the pressure if the temperature is tripled? (5pts)
2.Maybelline Cousteau’s backup oxygen tank reads 900 atm while
on her boat, where the temperature is 27 0C. When she dives
down to the bottom of an unexplored methane lake on a recently-
discovered moon of Neptune, the temperature will drop down to –
183 0C. What will the pressure in her backup tank be at that
temperature? (5pts)
3.Give at least 5 situations that you can use Gay-Lussac’s Law in
your everyday living.
Assignment
In a ½ crosswise answer the following question.

1.What is Combined Gas Law?

1.List at least 5 activities that you can apply Combined Gas

Law in your daily living.
