The Objective of the study

• 0bserving the process of first language acquisition of a 3


-year old Lebanese child.
• Analyzing the factors that influence L1 acquisition.
• The purpose of this study is validating or testing the truth
fulness of several language acquisition theories and princi
ples. It tried to find out if nature outweighs nurture
(or vice versa) or if the two work complimentarily.
Methodology

• the case study research design. A case st


udy is an “in depth study of a particular
situation rather than a sweeping statistic
al survey. It is a method used to narrow
down a very broad field of research into
one easily researchable topic” (Shuttlewo
rth, 2008).
The subject of this case study

Al Barraa is a 3-year old Muslim Lebanese born to


a middle-class Arabic family in Saudi Arabia.
Data Collection Technique

• The data collection techniques are mainly


observations, then supplemented with
interviews and questionnaires.
• He observed how Al Baraa talked to his
father and sister, his nature and behavior
in communicating using verbal and non-
verbal modes.
Data Analysis

The data were analyzed based on the theories and principles


of language acquisition such as:
-Noam chomsky (LAD)
-Behaviourist (conditioning and reinforcement)
Strengths

• Use several kind of data collection techniqu


es. So the data are considered to be valid.
• Individual cases in depth is that we can
find information we did not anticipate to find.
• The researcher combined some references t
o compare.
weaknesses
• On introduction part, researcher mentioned unnecessary
or irrelated information.
• The time of the research is short. It is stated that he spen
t 4 months for the study but he did not explain how man
y hours he spent with the subject of the study in a day.
• The procedures is not Systematic. It is not done in a speci
fic time or place.
• The researcher cannot speak Arabic. So his communicatio
n to the subject is very limited
• The researcher does not include the subject feelings and
the factors that affect him during the data collecting.
• The researcher should provide more examples of the inter
action and conversation between the subject and his fath
er, his mother, or the researcher.
