"COMMONLIT" IN YOUR
CLASSROOM

 An online literacy program. It allows you to....
 Choose from a variety of texts to assign to your students.
 Use pre-made units that are ready to be implemented.
 Analyze student performance and compare class reports on
key reading and writing skills.
WHAT IS
"COMMONLIT"?
HOW CAN "COMMONLIT" HELP OUR
STUDENTS?
 It allows teachers to differentiate and
individualize students learning by
Lexile level or grade level.
 It exposes our students to a variety of
genres and can support and enhance
the BCPS units that we teach.
 Every text assesses comprehension
through a few multiple-choice
questions as well as a short-written
response.
 It can also be used as a resource
for research activities.
 Texts are also available in multiple
languages.
 "CommonLit" has partnered with "texthelp" to provide a student
accessibility toolbar that provides teachers and students with the
ability to:
 Define words
 Translate text
 Listen to a read-aloud
 Highlight key ideas and evidence

ACCESSIBILITY after choosing the text that you would like to read.

MODE

By enabling "Guided Reading Mode" in

CommonLit, teachers can:

 Ensure that students take their time

while reading.

 Ensure that students are

comprehending the text while
reading.

 Ensure that students eventually

determine the correct answer to
guiding questions in the text.

 Ensure that students receive guided

reading practice even when not being
pulled by the teacher.

Guided Reading Mode also provides

excellent data to be analyzed after
assignments are completed by students.
 HELPFUL VIDEOS FOR TEACHERS & STUDENTS

 Through the CommonLit YouTube channel, you can find many

helpful videos for both teachers and students.
 For teachers, the channel houses videos with tips for how to
teach a certain text.
 For students, the channel houses pre-reading videos to activate
their background knowledge.
 We suggest subscribing to the CommonLit YouTube channel to
access these videos and receive updates when helpful videos are
uploaded:

 EFFECTIVE GRADING WITH COMMONLIT

 Grading on CommonLit is simple and efficient.

 Multiple choice questions are graded for you by
CommonLit, providing you with a graph showing
students' performance.
 This gives you time to focus on grading short answer
responses.
 An exemplar short answer is always provided by
CommonLit for your reference.
 Students' short answer responses are then stacked for
easy access, and you can provide a score from 0-4 as their
grade.
 Finally, there is an optional box to provide timely
feedback to students.
 A rubric is also provided for you via our Schoology page.
