Cargo Plan

 Outline shows :
- Vessel in profile to show general
distribution of cargo
- various decks in plan formation to
show actual disposition of cargo

 Types of cargo plans :


- Stowage Plan
- Pre-Stowage Plan

Stowage Plan

• Plan showing cargo actually stowed on


- board the vessel
• Uses of stowage plan :
- to facilitate discharge
- avoid over-carriage/short landing
- assist C/O calculate stability
- assist C/O make out future Pre-Stowage
Plan
- help to fight fire
- evidence of any cargo claims

Stowage Plan….

• compiled from duty officer’s notebook, Mate’s


Receipt & Boat Note
• depends on C/O ideas - essential features in ensure
smooth cargo operations with minimum delays
• useful for discharge ports as cargo distribution can
be seen at a glance from colour codes
• also useful for compiling “ Master Plan “ during
loading as available space can be monitored
• copies sent out to discharge ports so that prior
arrangements for gangs etc, can be made

Pre-Stowage Plan

 This is a guide to load the ship


 Made out by C/O after getting details of cargo to load
 Points to consider when making out the plan :
- load/Disch ports sequence
- segregation to prevent damage/contamination
- stowage for heavy lifts
- special stowage for valuables, refrigerated cargoes
-stability, trim, stresses at all stages of voyage
-good distribution to allow Quick turn around
- minimise tomming/securing
- proper separation to prevent short delivery or mixing
of cargo

General Duties of an Officer
while on Cargo Watch
Important Criteria :

 Safety of Life (crew, stevedores,repairer)


 Safety of Property (ship,cargo,wharf)
 Safety of Environment(air, sea, coast)

Duties of a Junior OOW
 Carry out C/O orders with regards to stowage
 Co-operate with shore foreman
 Cargo properly separated according to
ports/grades
 Update cargo plan
 Tend to moorings
 Make fire/safety rounds
 Do not allow over loading of cargo gear
 Ensure FFA ready
 Check condition of cargo slings & gears

 Prevent pilferage
 Keep vessel upright
 Check anchor positions if anchored
 Over side discharges covered
 Tally valuable cargo
 Keep accurate records of all stoppages
 Rig safety nets where required
 Rat Guards on all moorings
 No cargo over-stowed
 Closes hatches during rain-weather watch

Make regular rounds & check :
 Condition of gangway,moorings or cables
 draft, UKC to avoid dangerous list /trim
 state of weather/sea
 observe all regulations & safety precautions
 water level in bilges
 all person onboard & their location
 display of appropriate signals/lights
 In bad weather or storm warning, measures
taken to protect ship personnel & cargo

-- Prevent pollution of environment
-- In emergency, if vessel’s safety is
threatened :
 raise alarm
 inform Master
 prevent damage to ship
 request assistance from shore/other ships if
required

Cargo work

 Prevent pilferage
 Block with heavier & less vulnerable cargoes
 Daylight working. If not possible use lots of
lighting
 Employ watchmen
 Stow in Locker
 Close hatches & lock entrances during breaks
 Officer/crew in attendance during loading &
discharging

Short landing/Over carrying

 Short landing - discharging cargo

destination
 Over carrying - cargo carried
beyond the port of destination
 Responsibility of ship to tranship
the cargo to its destination.
