Research Proposal:

Dried Banana Leaves and Waste

Papers as Briquettes
Chapter 1

Introduction
I. Introduction
People think that the natural resources they have
are unlimited. Destructive human practices cause a lot of
problems like indiscriminate cutting of trees for making
furniture or structures, migration, fuel wood harvesting,
etc. There are organizations acting on it like NGOs through
planting trees but that is not enough to regenerate the
total needs of the people due to rapid increase of
population.
Another problem in the surroundings is the increase
production of waste papers from schools, offices, and
mostly are scattered everywhere causing the environment
to be unclean.
Banana is one of the most popular fruit of
Philippines since it is available all year-round and
cheaper than the other tropical fruits. Philippines one
of the world’s largest exporter of bananas, meaning
Bananas are abundant here in Philippines. The
problem is that the leaves will fall out eventually and
that makes the environment look dirty.

This study suggest to use banana leaves and

waste papers as fuel briquettes.

Objectives
II. Objectives

The objective of this study is to make a

product out of banana leaves and waste paper
as a fuel that is not costly and helps the
surrounding by collecting the dead banana
leaves. Different ratios are tested to get the right
ratio for an effective result.

Statement of the Problem

III. Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of
banana leaves and waste papers as fuel briquettes. Here, the
researchers sough to answer the following questions:
1. Which briquette burn-out faster?
2. What are the moisture content of the briquettes,
respectively?
3. How long did the briquettes made the water boil,
respectively?
Chapter 1

Scope and Limitation

IV. Scope
This investigation is conducted to determine the
effectiveness of banana leaves and waste papers as
fuel briquettes. The different ratios to be tested are the
following: 40g dried banana leaves : 25g waste
papers, 40g waste papers : 25g dried banana leaves,
32.5g dried banana leaves : 32.5g waste papers. The
amount of water is constant to all ratios with the
volume of 600ml. Denatured alcohol is used as igniter.
The amount heat emitted is tested through the use of
calorimeter.
IV. Limitation

The moisture content cannot be controlled since

the water holds more water than the banana leaves.
There is no binder used to make the banana leaves
and waste papers to be cohesive.

Significance of the Study

V. Significance of the Study

Fuel is very expensive these days especially wood

fuel that is used for cooking. This study is also
beneficial to the researchers and especially to the
people who do not have access of LPG or electric
stove. It is not costly unlike to the wood fuel sold. This
can also be a way of helping to lessen the garbage and
clean the banana plantation.
