ARLENE A. STA. MARIA

What image do you create in
your mind when you read this?

It was dark and dim

in the forest.
Is it something close to this?
Again, what picture do you see in
your mind when you read this?

She whiffed the aroma

of brewed coffee.
Is this the
same as the
one you
saw in your
mind?
IMAGERY DEFINITION:

peal of piano keys
as Shannon
began practicing

rotting fish.

What imageries are used in this opening passage from George Orwell’s
novel 1984?
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks
were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin
nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the
vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass
doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly
enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from
entering along with him. The hallway smelt of
boiled cabbage and old rag mats.
From William Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET

“O, she doth teach the torches to burn

bright!
It seems she hangs upon the cheek of
night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear …”
