STRESS STRAIN RELATIONS FOR DIAGONALLY CRACKED CONCRETE

Biaxially strained
concrete weaker than
uniaxially strained
concrete
ANALYSIS BASED ON MCFT

Due to complexity in considering M,V,N together , simple case of

symmetrically reinforced beam under pure shear V alone considered.
Affects of M & N added subsequently.
Flanged section used as variation of shear stress over depth is uniform &
hence diagonal cracks assumed to be over entire depth at uniform angle θ.

Prior to cracking:-
Pure shear leads to principle
compressive and tensile stresses
at 45⁰
Post cracking:-
Tensile stress at cracks=0
Concrete in between can still sustain
tensile stresses(f₁)
ASSUMPTIONS

Shear stress uniformly distributed over web of width bw and depth dv

So that

Under uniform stress as above, longitudinal strain Ɛx and inclination

of principle stress θ remains constant over depth dv.
SHEAR STRENGTH
Force in transverse rft balances vetrical components of stresses f1 & f2

fv – Avg stress in the stirrups

Substituting for f2
When transverse reinforcement is placed at an angle α

Vc depends on avg tensile stress f1 in diagonally cracked concrete and is given by

β –factor accounting for ability of concrete to transmit shear stresses across cracks
by aggregate interlock action.
LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT

Net resultant due to stresses f1 & f2 resulting from shear V :

Tensile force in longitudinal rft at top & bottom =0.5Nv

PURE SHEAR NECESSITATES LONGITUDINAL RFT TOO.

Asx be area of longitudinal rft and fsx be tensile stress due to shear

Asxfsx=Nv

Substituing for f2
VALUE OF f1

Depends on:

Location
Yield of trnsverse rft
Limit on stress Vci
Magnitude of Vci that can be transferred depends upon w
w depends on Ɛ1 & Sv
 Sv depends upon type, amount & distr of longitudinal and
transverse steel.

Recommended limiting value of Vci to avoid slipping along cracks

For yielding of longitudinal bars to be avoided

When transverse reinforcement yields at failure ,the shear contribution Vc of tensile

stresses has to be maintained at the diagonal cracks by the transverse component of
interface shear Vci .This condition gives

Expressing Vc in terms of β
RELEVANCE

Shear strength =

Axial tensile rft reqmts=

(In terms of f1,θ and steel stress)

i.e if Ɛ1, Ɛ2 & θ are known above can be calculated.

Stresses f1,f2 & fv must be within permissibility limits

Trial values of Ɛ1, θ & fv and adjusted until equlibrium

,compatability and limiting stress conditions are met.
