WHAT IS RESEARCH DESIGN?
• A research design is a systematic
approach that a researcher uses
to conduct a scientific study. It is
the overall synchronization of
identified components and data
resulting in a plausible outcome.
WHAT IS RESEARCH DESIGN?
To have a better understanding of
which research paper
topic, to begin with, it is imperative
to first identify the types of research
to start writing a research proposal.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF
RESEARCH DESIGN?
There are 4 types of Research designs which are:
• Exploratory Research
• Descriptive Research
• Explanatory Research
• Evaluation Research
Exploratory research
Exploratory research is defined as
a research used to investigate a
problem which is not clearly
defined. It is conducted to have a
better understanding of the existing
problem, but will not provide
conclusive results.
Exploratory research
An important aspect here is that the
researcher should be willing to
change his/her direction subject to
the revelation of new data or
insight.
Exploratory research
example
For example, an apparel brand
that wants to understand the
fashion purchasing trends
among New York buyers will
conduct a demographic
survey of this region,
gather population data and
then conduct descriptive
Exploratory research
example
The research will then uncover
details on “what is the
purchasing pattern of New York
buyers”, but not cover any
investigative details on “why”
the patterns exits. Because for
the apparel brand trying to
break into this market,
Descriptive Research
• Descriptive research is defined
as a research method that
describes the characteristics of
the population or phenomenon
that is being studied. This
methodology focuses more on
the “what” of the research
Descriptive Research
In other words, descriptive
research primarily focuses on
describing the nature of a
demographic segment, without
focusing on “why” a certain
phenomenon occurs. In other
words, it “describes” the subject

Explanatory Research
• Explanatory Research is
conducted for a problem which
was not well researched before,
demands priorities,
generates operational definitions
and provides a better-researched
model. It is actually a type
of research design which focuses
Explanatory Research
• The researcher starts with a
general idea and uses
research as a tool which could
lead to the subjects that would
be dealt with in the incoming
future. It is meant to provide
details where a small amount
Explanatory Research
• For starting your research,
you need to create
a research
outline or speech outline to
pitch your research idea
while writing a research
proposal to your professor
Explanatory Research
example
Consider a scenario where a juice
bar owner feels that increasing the
variety of juices will enable
increase in customers, however he
is not sure and needs more
information. The owner intends to
carry out an exploratory research to
find out and hence decides to do
an exploratory research to find out
Evaluation Research
• Evaluation research, also
known as program
evaluation, refers to research
purpose instead of a
specific method. Evaluation
research is the systematic
assessment of the worth or
Evaluation Research
• Evaluation research is closely
related to but slightly different
from more conventional social
research. It uses many of the
same methods used in
traditional social research, but
because it takes place within
Evaluation Research
context, it requires team skills,
interpersonal skills,
management skills, political
smartness, and other skills that
social research does not need
much. Evaluation research also
requires one to keep in mind the
Evaluation Research
example
1.How often do you use our
product in a day?
2.Were approvals taken from all
stakeholders?
3.Can you report the issue from the
system?
4.Can you submit the feedback
from the system?
