Water Stress - India
Water – India Facts
• India is facing a fresh water crisis. India has just 4%
of the world’s fresh water — but 16% of the global
population.
• Not accessing to safe drinking water : 163 million
• Country’s water related diseases : 21%;
• 500 kids younger than five die from diarrhea every
day in India;
• Across India, it is estimated that women spend 150
million work days every year fetching and carrying
the water, equivalent to a national loss of income of
INR 10 billion (1000 cr. ) ;
Cont.
• The situation is already bad because more than 2
lakh people in India die due to unsafe drinking
water- more than the number of people killed due to
terrorism around the globe.
• A shocking 600 million people face “high to
extreme” water stress.
• 21 Indian cities – including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai
and Hyderabad – will run out of groundwater by
2020, affecting 100 million people;
• 40 percent of India’s population will have no access
to drinking water by 2030;
• If this situation continues, India faces a six percent
loss in its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2050;
Water Consumptions
At present, 20 million wells pumping
water with free power supply;
The total potential area to be brought
under the micro irrigation (drip and
sprinkler) in India is 42.2 million hectare
of land, however only 3.9 million hectare
of land;
 As excess water is drawn, the
groundwater is depleting causing wastage
of water in many states;
 As a result, the water table in the
country is dipping every year by 0.4
meters
•Last Visit: Jambughoda, Halol :- last 10 years ( only 2 bore wells are
functioning out of 25, water level reduced from 70 feet to 120 feet,
although it’s on the bank of the river );
•Other Visit (same experiences): Dholera,Dang, Chhotaudepur, Dahod
etc.
Why We face Water Crisis
Average Rainfall (India)
Particulars 1970 2015 Difference Demand
Kharif – Summer 1050 mm 1000 mm -50 mm Increases
Cropping more than
Rabi- Winter 150 mm 100 mm -50 mm three times
Cropping
Population 55.36 Crores 130.91 Crores +75.55 Crores

•Dry Days – increased from 40% to 45 %; (Days without rain in

monsoon);
• Using more ground water reduces the Surface water flows in
rivers, decreases the water level in ponds, lakes and wells;
• Climate change and its oriented global warming are expected to
affect rainfall and water resources;
•Water Pollutions :Millions of liters of sewage that originate from
industrial, domestic and agricultural waste are discharged into rivers
in India (e.g., Ganges, Yamuna and Kaveri);
Chennai: Water Crisis - Man-made disaster
• Chennai was swamped by devastating floods in 2015, Now,
Chennai is crippling with a serious water crisis;
• Storage in four main water reservoirs of Chennai is at less
than one per cent level;
• Main three Rivers and the Buckingham Canal are dry today;
• Tamil Nadu has a 41 per cent rainfall deficiency this summer;
• In last decade : lost 33 per cent wetland to development
projects and 24 per cent agricultural land, crucial for
improving groundwater table;
• Blamed on: road construction - highways and flyovers,
airports and high-rises for depleting water resources in
Chennai
Lake Puzhal – City’s Largest Reservoir Water supplied through train – distance
217 Kms
Gujarat Water Scenario
Medium to High Stress
Narmada – Gujarat Ni Jivadori (2019)
• Naramada canal network supplying 375 cr. Litre/day supply to
4 crore people of Gujarat for drinking purpose;
• 190 crore litres of water per day to Kutch and Saurashtra;
• The Narmada canal network is providing drinking water to
8,911 villages, 165 cities and six municipal corporations;
• Urban Gujarat today is nearly 85% dependent on Narmada
water.
• Alarming Situation: Drastic decrease in water yield of the
Narmada over the past from 30.84 million acre feet (MAF) in
2007-08 to only 14.8 M.

Water requirement Scenario – NITI Aayog Report
Water consumption by Indian
• An average Indian person uses 130-150 L
of water everyday on an average, on
regular day.
• I consume water per day.xlsx
• Amdavad Consumes water per day.xlsx
Part - 2
• Small Solution :- Create Army
• Only awareness program is not solution, can
not change habit of the person through one
two program,
• How to save water in Agriculutre sector (
most water consumption sector) – and
Insustrial Sector will Discuss later;
How to save water in
Domestic/Ahmedabad ?
SRC approach :
• Water Saving;
• Water Restoring/Recharging;
• Water Creating;

Create Water Army for executing “SRC”

approach;
Water Creation by Societies/Groups and Individual
Households

-Miyawaki Method;
How? -Roof top gardening
Miyawaki method for afforestation

• Named after the Japanese scientist Dr. Akira Miyawaki;

• Miyawaki method is the random and dense plantation of
native species.
• This methodology has been extremely successful with over 17
million trees planted in 1700 locations;
• These forests are multi-layered forests;
• These forests can grow upto 10 times faster, be 30 times more
dense (absorbs 30 times more carbon dioxide) and 100 times
more bio-diverse;
