May 21, 1958
Senator A. S. "Mike" Monroney (D-OK) introduced a
bill to create an independent Federal Aviation
Agency to provide for the safe and efficient use of
national airspace.
Two months later, on August 23, 1958, the
President signed the Federal Aviation Act, which
transferred the Civil Aeronautics Authority's
functions to a new independent Federal Aviation
Agency responsible for civil aviation safety.

December 31, 1958
Under provisions of the act, the Federal Aviation Agency
would begin the operations 60 days after the appointment of the first
Federal Aviation Agency Administrator.

On November 1, 1958, retired Air Force General Elwood

"Pete" Quesada became the first Federal Aviation Agency
Administrator.

60 days later (12-31-1958) the Federal Aviation Agency began the

operations.

April 1, 1967
Congress authorized the creation of a
cabinet department that would combine major
federal transportation responsibilities.
This new Department of Transportation
(DOT) began full operations on April l, 1967. On
that day, the Federal Aviation Agency became one
of several modal organizations within DOT and
received a new name, the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA)

functions
The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) is the agency
of the United States Department of
Transportation responsible for the
regulation and oversight of civil
aviation within the U.S., as well as
operation and development of the
National Airspace System. Its
primary mission is to ensure safety
of civil aviation.
The responsibilities of the FAA include:
● Regulating civil aviation to promote safety
within the U.S. and abroad;
●
Encouraging and developing civil
aeronautics, including new aviation
technology;
● Developing and operating a system of air
traffic control and navigation for both civil
and military aircraft;
● Researching and developing the National
Airspace System and civil aeronautics;
● Developing and carrying out programs to
control aircraft noise and other
environmental effects of civil aviation;
● Regulating U.S. commercial space
transportation. The FAA licenses
commercial space launch facilities and
private launches of space payloads on
expendable launch vehicles.

A local Seattle law firm has filed
a new lawsuit against the
Boeing Co. and a legal claim
against the FAA, alleging
violations of law and a civil
conspiracy in the crashes of
two Max jets that killed 346
people.
The legal actions were filed on
behalf of families of victims
killed in the second crash of a
Max jet, operated by Ethiopian
Airlines, on March 10.
Lawyers for the firm of
Friedman Rubin in Seattle say
the lawsuit and claim allege
that Boeing and the FAA
conspired together to certify an
aircraft that was unsafe and
should not have been allowed
to fly - especially after the first
crash of a Max plane operated FAA officials have six months
by Lion Air in October 2018. to respond to the claim against
the agency. If the claim is
denied, then the law firm
intends to file suit against it.
The claim against the FAA
alleges that its inspectors
dropped the ball in certifying
the Max plane and also by
allowing it to keep flying after
the Lion Air crash.
