ARMATURE REACTION

• By armature reaction is meant the effect of magnetic

field set up by armature current on the distribution of
under main poles of a generator. The armature
magnetic field has two effects
1. It demagnetises or weakness the
main flux and,
2. It cross magnetises or distorts it.

• M N A : Magnetic Neutral Axis

• The flux which is produce by the field winding is
called field winding is called field flux.
• The flux which is produce by armature winding is
called as armature flux.

• These effects are well illustrated in figure 27.1

which shows the distributed of a bi-polar generator
when there is no current in the armature conductors.

• Moreover, the brushes are shown touching the

armature conductors directly, although in practice,
they touch commutator segments, It is seen that :

1. The flux is distributed symmetrically with respect to
polar axis, which is the line joining the centres of
NS poles.
2. The magnetic neutral axis or plane (M.N.A) coincides
with the geometrical neutral axis or plane (G.N.A).

• So every current produce its own magnetic field and

due to armature the armature flux is produce. So.
Armature flux will set up its own magnetic field. So
the effect of flux on the distribution of main field
flux is called armature reaction.

• When armature Reaction is occur motoring action
takes place in the generator and the generator action
takes place in the motor.

COMPENSATING WINDING

Methods used to reduce armature reaction

1. Use of compensating winding :

It is used to neutralize the armature flux in the
pole and the winding are mostly concentric winding.

2. Commutation :
The reversal of current is to take place in short
interval when a coil is short circuited by a brush. So
that transfer of current from one direction to other is
carried one W/O any sparking. This process is called
commutation.

Methods of improving commutation

1. Resistance commutation

Low resistance carbon brushes

Replaced by high resistance

carbon brushes

2. Emf Commutation

Brush shift

Change the angle of

brush.

Inter poles

Providing extra pole

between GNA and MNA.
