•Explicit information is any information
stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room
for doubt. There’s no need to look for clues.
The information is directly written in the
text.

•Implicit information is implied rather than

stated. Think for what you read. Information
is not written but the idea is there. Using
what is read to make an inference.
Inference = evidence from
the text+background
knowledge
All living things are made up of
cells. Since humans are alive we
are all made up of cells. Cells make
our tissue. Tissue makes our body
organs. Organs make our body
systems. Cells are the building
block of our bodies.
In Journalistic Writing Direct
and Reported speech play an
important role.
Direct Speech or Quoted is a report of
the exact words used by a speaker or
writer(also known as quotation marks
or inverted commas).
Example:
Samia said, “ I go to school every
day.”
Indirect Speech or Reported is a
report on what someone else said
or wrote without using that
person’s exact words
Example:
Samia said that she went to
school everyday.
1. All inverted commas or
quotation marks are omitted and
the sentence ends with a full stop.
2. Conjunction ‘that’ is added
before the indirect statement
3. The pronoun I is changed to she.
4. The verb am is changed to ‘was’
Another example:
Princess said, “He has finished his
food.”

Princess said that he had finished

his food.
Modifier
• Modify is to change or to alter
something.
• Modifiers helps clarify the
meaning of nouns. They serve
to make statements more
meaningful, and concrete.
What is an adjective and a verb?
As single-word modifiers,
adjectives are different from
adverbs. Adjectives are fixed.
Example:
• The English teacher was absent
yesterday.
• The English teacher was absent
yesterday unfortunately.
Most single-word adverbs can have
different positions in a sentence.
Example:

•The English teacher was absent yesterday

unfortunately.
•Unfortunately, the English teacher was absent
yesterday.
•The English teacher unfortunately was absent
yesterday.
Other forms of modifiers have
rules to help you use them.
Precede singular count nouns with: this,
that, other, another, one, any, every, each,
neither, either, or some.
Example:
That teacher was absent.
Precede plural count nouns with: these,
those, some, many, a lot of, few, a few, or
quite a few.
Example:
These notes are not legible.
