INTRODUCTION

Geiger Muller Counting System, type GC601 manufactured by NUCLEONIX and is

designed

by 8 bit microcontroller chip. This system with accessories is an ideal choice for

teaching / demonstrating various G.M experiments and this counting system can be

Used for carrying out number of Nucleaar Physics Experiments such as Charecteristic

Curve of a G.M Counter, to verify Inverse Square Law etc.

 OBJECTIVE: To design and to analyse the GEIGER COUNTING SYSTEM type GC601
and with the help of G.M detectors (type G.M 120, G.M 125) calculate the amount of
radiation.

 PROCEDURE:

1. Place the source (type BETA-GAMMA) in the End Window Stand type SG200 which
has both Sample and Absorber trays.

2. The source must be placed in its appropriate distance to detect the radiation by the
G.M detectors.

3. GM 120 is a Halogen Quenched End Window GM Detector, receives the radiation and
ionization takes place. This G.M tube is operated at an voltage -500V.

4. G.M tube is connected to the device with a MHV Cable which supplies Negative Tail
Pulses to the GEIGER COUNTING SYSTEM (GCS 601) at the rearer end.

5. The pre-amplifier in the CONTROL section in the GC-601 amplifies the pulses and
after series of operations this is converted to Digital Signal.
6. In this process as the Negative Tail Pulses are converted to Digital Signals
(ADC Converter) , and output is fed to Binary counter.

7. As the Voltage Knob varies the Count that is being Displayed on the LCD
DISPLAY varies.

8. Note down the readings and at certain voltage there is a BREAKDOWN in the
counts (Large value deviation of counts readings).

9. Stop the procedure and with the readings we can calculate the Slope of
Detector that may ensures the life span of the detector and its efficiency.

10. Now any Unknown Sample can be placed in the sample tray and follow the
steps as above. By this we can notify that how much a sample is effected in the
radiation premises.
