INTRODUCTION

• This is the fourth refinery of indian oil corporation

• It is situated in the state of west bengal and is about 123 km from kolkata city.
• It was commissioned in January 1975 with an initial crude oil processing capacity of 2.5
MMTPA. The present processing capacity of 7.5 MMTPA.
• The petroleum products are transported through various modes like railways,
roadways ,as well as environment friendly pipelines.

FIRE AND SAFETY DEPARTMENT
● On site industrial fire department comprised of full time career personnel.

● Volunteer emergency response team members from within the various work groups.

● Fire station has the following apparatus: 2 specialized foam engines, recue/hazmat
truck, 2 foam tenders, 3 squads and a utility truck.
TPS (THERMAL POWER STATION)
BASIC OVERVIEW OF THERMAL POWER PLANT

● This is a CPP(captive power plant) i.e. the plant uses its generated power and doesn’t
sell the power.
● There are 4 boilers, 4 TGs and 4 transformers in the TPS.
● Among the 4 transformers, 3 of them are 6.6/0.415kV and 1 one of them is 11/6.6kV.
● In TPS there are 4 auxiliary generation bus i.e. AG1-AG4, which are fed from the
4TGs.
● From the auxiliary generation bus the distribution bus bars i.e. A01-A04 are fed.A05
and A06 is fed from the grid of state electricity board which is used in case of any
fault in the refinery so as to maintain the continuity of supply.
SLD OF POWER GEN. AND DISTRIBUTION
ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS OF A THERMAL
POWER SYSTEM

● Transformer
● Alternator
● Exciter
● Voltage Regulator
● Circuit Breaker
● Current Transformer
TRANSFORMERS
● In TPS there are 4 transformers, among them 3 of them are
6.6/0.415 KV which are used to run LT machines and 1 of them is
11/6.6KV for HT machines and distribution.
● All the 6.6/0.415 KV transformers are having ONAN type of cooling.
The 11/6.6 KV transformer is having ONAN & ONAF type of cooling.
● Ascar oil is used in the transformers for cooling purpose.
● Bucholz relay is used for protection against internal faults.
ALTERNATOR
● In CPP-1 there are 4 alternators, among them 3 are 10.5MW and 1 of them is 16.5MW.
● The alternator which is having the rating of 16.5 MW also have a brushless exciter and a
stroboscopic panel.
● All the alternators have speed of 3000 rpm.
● All the alternators are coupled with the turbine and only the 4th alternator is having a
gearbox as the speed of turbine of TG4 is 6000 rpm.
● All the TG’s are gradually started using a baring motor which provides the initial torque
to the system and it is also used for gradually stopping the motor so as to avoid breaking
of the shaft due to excessive heating.
● The static part of the alternator i.e stator has 3 phase double star winding from which 3
phase AC output power is available at a rated voltage of 6.6 kV.
● The rotating part of alternator i.e. rotor has field winding by controlled DC power
supplied from DAVR(Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator)
EXCITER
● The type of excitation system used is

brushless excitation system.

● It is used to provide the variable DC

current.

● It enhances the transient stability

subsequent to a fault.

● Communicate with the power plant

control system and to keep the machine

Within permissible operating range.

VOLTAGE REGULATOR

Major function of this unit is as follows:

● Control the system voltage within prescribed limits.

● Prevention of dangerous over voltages on the occurrence of sudden loss of load on the
system.
● Increase of excitation under system fault conditions so that maximum synchronising
power exists at the time of clearance of fault, to prevent loss of synchronism.
● Proper division of reactive power between parallelly operating alternators
CIRCUIT BREAKER
● A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an
electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short
circuit. Its basic function is to interrupt current flow after a fault is detected.

● The types of circuit breaker used in the plant are air circuit breaker(ACB), vaccum
circuit breaker(VCB), SF6 oil circuit breaker.

● These circuit breakers can be operated manually or by remote control under normal
conditions and automatically under fault conditions.
CURRENT TRANSFORMER
● Current transformers (CT) is primarily used for measuring high currents.

● CT’s are step up transformers which are connected to an ammeter for measuring the
current flowing through the circuit.

● CT’s are also used for providing protection to the alternators and transformers by
following differential protection or MERZ-PRICE protection scheme.
ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE

MOTOR MAINTENANCE
There are 3 types of maintenance :

● Preventive maintenance
○ A schedule(6 months)
○ B schedule(1 year)
○ C
● Predictive maintenance
○ Temperature, Vibration, IR value
● Breakdown maintenance
● Troubleshooting
ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE(CONT.)

TRANSFORMER MAINTENANCE

● Silica Gel Replacement

● WT & OT monitoring
● Breaker maintenance & thermal checking
● Relay testing
● Tightening
● Leakage Arresting
GAS TURBINE UNIT(GTG)
OVERVIEW OF GAS TURBINE POWER PLANT
● This unit is called the CPP-2. It is being commissioned way after
CPP-1 for the further extension of power plant for meeting higher
load demand.
● In GTG there are 3 GTG units, which are having 20.5MVA rating.
● All the GT units are having a rating of 11KV which is being stepped
down to 6.6 KV for further distribution.
● The GTG are initially driven by a diesel engine and when the GT
attains the optimum speed the diesel engine in decoupled.
● The GTG mainly uses HSD(High Speed Diesel) and Naptha. Initially
for starting purpose HSD is used and after attaining the speed the
fuel is switched over to Naptha.
● As all the gas turbines are having a speed of 6000rpm and the
generators are having a speed of 3000rpm so a gear box is being
installed in between them.
● Warren pump is used to pump the fuel through the 5 micron filter so
that the fuel can easily burnt.
