COMMUNICATION &
PROCESS OF
COMMUNICATION
The term ‘communication’ has been
derived from the word ‘communis’ or
‘communicare’ which means ‘common’.
Thus to communicate means ‘to make
common’ or ‘to make known’.
Communication is the act of conveying
intended meaning to another entity or
group through the use of mutually
understood signs and semiotic rules
COMMUNICATION IS A PROCESS
OF EXCHANGING :-
 INFORMATION
 IDEA
 THOUGHTS

effective and efficient ways.

COMPONENTS OF COMMUNICATION
Process of communication is a way through which a
communication flows

 SENDER - source of communication

 ENCODING - transformation of idea
 MESSAGE - physical form of idea
 CHANNEL – medium of communication
 RECEIVER - information grabber
 DECODING - conversion of message
 FEEDBACK - backbone of communication
 NOISE - barrier in communication
 Sender is the source of every
communication.
 Sender can be an individual or group
though ultimately, it is an individual
who will act on behalf of group.
 Sender decides what message to
send.
 Sender encodes it using symbols he
or she assumes the receiver will
understand.
 Sender converts message into a
signal.
Encoding means converting the idea into a
understandable message. It is very essential a part of
communication

The encoder encodes the message in proper way and

send it to the receiver and receiver interprets the
message.
MESSAGE
It refers to the content that a sender
will pass on to the receiver.
Message is basically a physical form
of idea and it is the core of
communication.
It can consist of symbols & words.
The message should be clear so
that receiver can understand it.
A message may be delivered by
various means, including courier,
telegraphy, carrier pigeon and
electronic bus. A message can be
the content of a broadcast. An
interactive exchange of messages
forms a conversation.
CHANNEL
Channel is a medium through which a message travels from a
sender to a receiver. A channel maybe a mass media or
interpersonal. Selection of channel depends upon message to be
conveyed, availability of channel, cost and effectiveness of channel
distribution.
Channels are the way we convey our message. These channels
include oral such as telephone and face-to-face conversations as
well as written such as email and text messages. Each individual
channels have their own strength and weakness.
The receiver is the person from whom a message is intended.
He is the most important aspect of the communication
process which is a two way process and incomplete without
receiver. Any change or neglect on the part of the receiver
will hamper the entire process.
The degree to which receiver understands the message is
dependent upon his knowledge, his response to message and
the reliance of sender on receiver.
 Decoding is on the receiver’s end of communication.
 Decoding is the process by which the receiver
assigns meaning to the symbols encoded by the
sender.
 Communication will be more effective if decoding
matches clearly with encoding
o Communication can go
downhill at this stage if
receiver is not practicing
active listening skills or
if they do not posses
enough information to
decode the message
accurately.
FEEDBACK
Feedback is the way to posses your idea and view in front of
sender and it will help him to know that you understood the
message. Feedback is the backbone of every communication.
 Feedback should describe the effect of the person’s behaviour
on you.
 Feedback should be as specific as possible.
 It should be given time to time.
 It should be about behaviour not personality.
NOISE
 Anything which disrupts the communication process is noise. Noise is a big barrier
for communication.
 Noise is the unplanned static or distortion during the communication process that
results in the receiver’s getting a different message than the sender sends.
 It is the disturbance occurred in the process of transferring the information. Noise
may occur in any of the steps in the communication process.
CONCLUSION
Effective
communication
is giving,
receiving or
exchange of
information or
idea so that
message is
completely
understood by
everybody
involved.
