meaning of the
word MOTHER?
Matsuo Basho

 Was born to a samurai
family in Ueno, Iga
province, Japan, in 1644.

 His father died when


Basho was a child, and it
is said that the family
was not prosperous.

 Young Basho spent time as
a servant to the local lord’s
son, Todo Yoshikiyo, who
was just two years older
than Basho.

 After his lord’s death in


1666, however, Bashō
abandoned his
samurai (warrior) status to
devote himself to poetry.
Matsuo Basho

 He was the most famous
poet of the Edo period in
Japan.

 He was the greatest master


of Japanese Haiku.

 He died on November 28,


1694, Ōsaka.
“Ubasute”

 means "abandoning
an old woman", and it
is usually referred to
as "Ubasuteyama".

 A custom allegedly

performed in Japan in the
distant past, whereby an
infirm or elderly relative was
carried to a mountain, or
some other remote, desolate
place , and left there to die.
