 Speed in a given

direction
 When you know the
speed and direction of
an object’s motion, you
know the velocity of
the object
 Example 115 km/hour
west.
 Velocity is speed in a given direction. It is also
determined by using the distance from the
starting position to the ending position, rather
than the distance of the path taken.

 Velocity is very important for airplane pilots,

weather forecasters and anyone driving from
one place to another.
Examples
 A runner moves eastward at 10m/s.
◦ speed is 10m/s
◦ velocity is 10m/s east
 When we say a car travels at 60 km/h, we
are specifying its speed.
 When we say a car moves at 60 km/h to
the north, we are specifying its velocity.
 Constant speed means steady speed.
Something with constant speed
doesn’t speed up or slow down.

 Constant velocity means both constant

speed and constant direction.

 Constant direction is a straight line, so

constant velocity means motion in a
straight line at constant speed.
If either the speed or the direction (or
both) is changing, then the velocity is
changing.

 Constant speed and constant velocity

are not the same.

 A body may move at constant speed

along a curved path but it does not
move with constant velocity, because
its direction is changing every instant.
When describing velocity,
you need to state the
direction.
 Ex. 40 km/hr east

 The speedometer of a car
moving northward reads 60
km/h. It passes another car
that travels southward at 60
km/h. Do both cars have the
same speed? Do they have
the same velocity?
Answer:
Bothcars have the
same speed, but they
have opposite
velocities because
they are moving in
opposite directions.
How is velocity
different from
speed?
A ship traveled 9.5
hours at a velocity
of 820 kilometer
per hour. What is
the distance did it
cover?
What is the velocity of
a plane that traveled
300 kilometer from
New York to Los
Angeles in 10,020
minutes (convert
minutes to hours)?
It took 3.5 hours for a
train to travel the
distance between two
cities at a velocity of
120 kilometer per
hour. How many
kilometer lie between
the two cities?
Keisha is pedaling her
bicycle at a velocity
of 0.10 kilometer per
hour, East. How far
will she travel in 2
hours?
How long would it take
a SUV to travel a
distance of 220
kilometer, if it’s
traveling at a velocity
of 55 kilometer per
hour?
