INTRODUCTION
• Human basic needs is water for daily life. Sufficient water distribution depends on
design of a water tank in certain area.

• There are three types of water tanks:

 UNDERGROUND WATER TANK (UWT)

 GROUND WATER TANK (GWT)

 ELEVATED WATER TANK (EWT)

3
• The elevated water tanks are public utility structures and considered as important
city services in major cities and villages.

• An elevated water tank is a large water storage container constructed for the
purpose of holding water supply to pressurization water distribution system.

• From design point of view, the elevated tanks may be classified as

o Rectangular tank,
o Circular tank,
o Spherical tank.
o Intze tank.
• Now a days intze tank are considered as most stable geometric configuration due
to its shape. Since the Intze type tank container has an optimal load balancing
shape and it is widely preferred, it is selected here. This type of container and
supporting structure has been extensively used in India since last few decades.

• As all of we know that measure of good civil engineering structure is economy in
its design.

• Design of a intze tank involves proportioning and structural design, in which

proportioning part mainly depends upon geometric aspects.

• Optimum cost design of such a structure needs several trial design. In present
study, an optimum cost design of intze tank considering geometric and structural
design aspects. The cost of the intze tank has been considered as the objective
function and the geometric parameters have been considered as constraints.

• The aim of optimal design is to determine those values of design variables which
satisfies safety and stability requirements and also gives economy in design.

5
AIM & OBJECTIVES
 AIM
• To develop a cost effective geometric model of intze tank using
optimization techniques.

 OBJECTIVES
• Review of design basis for elevated liquid storage structures.
• Review of indian standards available for design of intze tank.
• Review of optimization techniques available for Reinforced Concrete
structure design.
• Formulation of analytical model for design
• Model validation
• Estimation of intze tank.
• Study of geometric parameters affecting design of intze tank.
• To derive most suitable numerical limits of geometric parameters for
economical design.
LITERATURE SURVEY
1. Seismic response of liquid-filled elevated tanks

By M. Moslemi, M.R. Kianoush, W. Pogorzelski (2011)

The main focus of the current study is to evaluate the performance of
elevated tanks under seismic loading. In this study, the finite element (FE) technique is
used to investigate the seismic response of liquid filled tanks.
The computed FE time history results were also compared with those
obtained from current practice and a very good agreement was observed. This verifies
the validity of the current practice in estimating the seismic response of liquid filled
elevated water tanks. It should be noted that this study was restricted to only one
elevated tank subjected to a specific ground motion. As a continuation of this research
study, a parametric study can be carried out to determine the effect of various tank and
shaft dimensions as well as different ground motions on response.

2. Parametric study for optimization of storage tanks considering sloshing
phenomenon using coupled BEM–FEM

By M.J. Ketabdari , H. Saghi (2013)

Trapezoidal storage tanks trapezoidal containers was suggested for

liquid storage tanks
Maximum pressure and total force on linear sidewall trapezoidal tank
perimeter decreases considerably (about 60% ) respect to rectangular one.
conventional rectangular tanks in tanker ships can be replaced by proposed
geometric shape tanks.

3. Seismic Performance of RC Elevated Water Tanks with Frame Staging and
Exhibition Damage Pattern

By Soheil Soroushnia, Sh. Tavousi Tafreshi2b, F. Omidinasab, N. Beheshtian,

Sajad Soroushnia (2011)

Great number of water tanks with frame staging suffered damage and a
few collapsed. In comparison with reinforced concrete elevated water tanks with shaft
staging, the reinforced concrete elevated water tanks with frame staging have shown
better seismic behavior to resistant against lateral loads

The failure modes of reinforced concrete elevated tanks with frame

staging are shear and bending modes in beams, axial mode in columns, cracks in joints
and torsion mode

4. STRUCTURAL CONTROL SYSTEM FOR ELEVATED WATER TANK

By Asari Falguni P 1, Prof.M.G.Vanza (April-June, 2012)

An analytical investigation of the seismic response of elevated

water tanks using fiction damper

From the analysis we found that optimum slip load is between

6% to 18% base shear of structure more effective to reduce story drift
acceleration, base shear and time period

Friction damper also improve ductility in structure

5. SEISMIC VULNERABILITY OF ELEVATED WATER TANKS USING
PERFORMANCE BASED-DESIGN

F. Omidinasab and H. Shakib

A reinforced concrete elevated tank with a container capacity of 900 m3,

supported by a frame structure is selected here. A finite element model (FEM) is
used to model the elevated tank system. Analysis has been done based on
various filling condition and base shear, over turning moment and slab
displacement are measured against various filling conditions.

From the study, author has concluded that,

o Critical response of the elevated tank does not always occur in full condition
and it may happen in low percentage of filling and even in empty condition
of the tank.
o Maximum displacement in the height of the structure in nonlinear dynamic
analysis, considering the soil condition, happens in the joint of the
supporting system to the container.
