Prose
• form of language that
exhibits a grammatical
structure and a natural
flow of speech, rather
than a rhythmic
structure as in
traditional poetry.
• the common unit of prose
is purely grammatical,
such as a sentence or
paragraph.
Prose
• derived from the Old
French prose, which in
turn originates in the
Latin expression prosa
oratio (literally,
straightforward or
direct speech)
Function of Prose
While there have been many critical
debates over the correct and valid
construction of prose, the reason for its
adoption can be attributed to its
loosely-defined structure, which most
writers feel comfortable using when
expressing or conveying their ideas and
thoughts.
Function of Prose
It is the standard style of writing used
for most spoken dialogues, fictional as
well as topical and factual writing, and
discourses. It is also the common
language used in newspapers,
magazines, literature, encyclopedias,
broadcasting, philosophy, law, history,
the sciences, and many other forms of
communication.

• Biography – a story of a certain person’s life
written by another who knows the subject
well.

and is meant to be
act on stage.

• something invented, imagined, or
feigned to be true
• Novel
• Short story

plot.

• Bathala is the supreme
God of Tagalogs, a very
influential ethnic group
in Philippines. The story
is about how Bathala
killed another God
named Ulilang Kalulawa
in a fight after which he
created human life.

Legends
• legenda, which means “things to
be read”
• Legends may be transformed
over time, in order to keep it
fresh and vital, and realistic

believed by many but cannot be
proved to be true

region.

Folktales
• Folktales are generally
passed down from one
generation to another and
often take on the
characteristics of the time
and place in which they
are told.
• often reflect the values
and customs of the culture
from which they come.
