HISTORY
•(1830) Swimming emerged as a
competitive recreational activity
in England.
• Other European countries also
established swimming federations:
Germany in 1882, France in 1890,
and Hungary in 1896.
• (1889) The first European amateur
swimming competitions were in
Vienna.
CAPTAIN MATTHEW
WEBB
• Was the first man to swim in 1875,
using the breast stroke technique in
England.
• He swam the channel 21.26 miles
(34.21km) in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

WHAT IS SWIMMING?

 Swimming is an individual or
team sport that requires the use of
one’s arms and legs to move the
body through water. The sport
take place in pools or open water.
WHAT IS COMPETITIVE SWIMMING?

• It is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with


varied distance events in butterfly, back stroke,
breast stroke, freestyle and individual medley. in
addition to these individual events, four swimmers
can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay.
WHAT IS OPEN WATER SWIMMING?

• In open water swimming, where the


events are swum in body of open water
(lake or sea) there are also 5km, 10km
and 25km events for , men and women.
WHAT IS MEDLEY RELAY?

• A medley relay consists of four


swimmers who will swim a different
stroke. the order for medley relay is:
back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly and
freestyle.
ADVANTAGES
OF SWIMMING
• The functioning of the heart and
circulatory affected positively. the
increase in metabolism, stress and
resistance of water during bathing
have a significant effect on the heart
and circulatory system .
• It increases the functional capacity
of respiratory muscles. swimming is
directly linked to adequate and
regular supply of oxygen. good
breathing technique strengthens the
respiratory muscles.
SOCIAL ADVANTAGES

• Swimming is a social activity as well as a


physical exercise. Pools and beaches
provide venues for meeting new people and
socializing with friends. People of all ages
can participate, making it an enjoyable
family activity for children and adults.

DROWNING
• The danger of drowning is a real risk for
swimmers, especially children. always
keep an eye on children when they are
near pools and install a fence around
your pool if you have one at home.
CHLORINE

• The chlorine used to disinfect the


water in swimming pools is a toxin
that might cause asthma and other
respiratory conditions.

• Prone- this is a horizontal position in the


water with the face down.
• Supine- this is a horizontal position in
the water with your face up.

FREE STYLE STROKE
• or front crawl is often the preferred stroke of
experienced swimmers. and also called the most
fastest of all swimming stroke.
• It is swum in a prone horizontal position (face
down)
• The arms move continuously and alternately.
• The legs do quick, compact alternate up
and down movements. (fluttered kick)
• The breath, the swimmer turn his head
sideways during the arm recovery.
BREAST STROKE
• It is the most popular swimming stroke of all.
• Involves frog kicking alternates with a
simultaneous arm movement.
• Breast stroke swum in a prone position.
• Breathing occurs at the end of the underwater
arm pull.
BUTTERFLY STROKE

• It is a quite distinctive and spectacular


swimming stroke to behold.
• Involves the dolphin kick with a
windmill like movement of both arms.
BACK STROKE
• It is the only one of the four competitive strokes
swum on the back.
• The arms alternate pulling in the water and
recovering above water.
• The legs do fluttered kick.
• Breathing is not restricted.
SIDE STROKE

• It is an older swimming stroke


swum on the side. it uses a scissor
kick and asymmetrical underwater
arm movements.
