with the nature of art and the concepts which
help interpret and evaluate individual works of
art.

of sensory principle - in other words judgment
or evaluation by the senses.

perception”.
WHAT IS BEAUTY
 Beauty is a character of a person, animal,
place, object, or idea that provides a
perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning,
or satisfaction.
 Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics,
sociology, social psychology, and culture. An
“ideal beauty” is an entity which is admired,
or possesses features widely attributed to
beauty in a particular culture, for perfection.
What are the three theories of
aesthetics?
 The three aesthetic theories of art criticism are most
commonly referred to:
• Imitationalism
• Formalism
• Emotionalism

 Some critics think that the most important thing

about a work of art is the realistic presentation of
subject matter.
Imitationalism

It refers to an art that focuses on

things being realistically represented.
It is a theory of art that judge's
artwork based on how real it looks.
Formalism

It refers to the view in the philosophy of art

that the properties in virtue of which an
artwork is an artwork—and in virtue of
which its value is determined—are formal
in the sense of being accessible by direct
sensation (typically sight or hearing) alone.
Emotionalism

An aesthetic and critical theory

of art which places emphasis on the
expressive qualities. According to this
theory, the most important thing about a
work of art is the vivid communication of
moods, feelings, and ideas.

Why are aesthetics important?

Aesthetics is the study of beauty. Beauty

is important in life because it is
representative of our values. Values are
beautiful because they define our
actions through life. The study of Values
could be called Ethics.
