Nicomedes Márquez Joaquín

- usually known as Nick Joaquin, was a Filipino


writer, historian and journalist, best known for his
short stories and novels in the English language. He
also wrote using the pen name Quijano de Manila.
Joaquin was conferred the rank and title of National
Artist of the Philippines for Literature.
Short Stories
• May Day Eve – is a short story,
written after World War II, it became
one of Joaquin's “signature stories”
that became a classic in Philippine
literature in English. It is about
Badoy's and Agueda's bitterness
they harboured for each other during
their wedding.
• The Summer Solstice - also
known as "Tatarin" or
"Tadtarin", is a short story. The
book tells the story of a ritual
performed by women to call
upon the gods to grant fertility.
The ritual they perform is to
dance around a century-old
Balete tree.
• Doña Jeronima - is a love story and folklore-in-the-
making. Set in the 17th century, this is the secret love
story of the powerful Archbishop of Manila. ... The
Legend of the Dying Wanton is a poignant mother-esque
and son story that highlights the power of piety and faith.

late Nick Joaquin, a National
Artist for literature, was
enamored with Our Lady of the
Rosary of La Naval that he wrote
a stirring essay about her and the
battles that were fought and won
through her intercession.
