Global Warming

vs
Climate Change
•refers to • is the term used to
describe a gradual
significant, long- increase in the average
temperature of the
term changes in Earth's atmosphere and
the global climate. its oceans, a change that
is believed to be
permanently changing
the Earth’s climate.
• 1800-1870 - Europe
 Level of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) in the atmosphere, as
later measured in ancient ice, is about 290 ppm (parts per
million).
 Mean global temperature (1850-1890) is roughly 13.7°C.
 First Industrial Revolution. Coal, railroads, and land
clearing speed up greenhouse gas emission, while better
agriculture and sanitation speed up population growth.
• 1930s
 Global warming trend since late 19th century reported.
• 1939-1945
 World War II. Military grand strategy is largely driven by a
struggle to control oil fields.
• 1974
Serious droughts since 1972 increase concern
about climate, with cooling from aerosols
suspected to be as likely as warming; scientists
doubt all theories as journalists talk of a new
ice age.
• 2018
Damage from impacts — droughts, floods, tropical
cyclones, wildfires, decline of wildlife—is seen
sooner and at lower CO2 levels than expected.
Mean global temperature is 14.7°C, the warmest
in tens of thousands of years. Level of CO2in the
atmosphere is 405 ppm, the highest in millions of
years.
CAUSE AND EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING
CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

1. Increase CO2 concentration in the air 1. Melt of the ice caps

2. Agriculture -flooding coastal areas
-Deforestation -sea level rises
-Burning the forest 2. Climate Change
3. Industrialization -desertification -droughts
-Burning fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, -hurricanes -tornadoes
coal) in power plants, factories, cars, etc. 3. Loss of Biodiversity
4. Rotting Trees -migration of species
-produces carbon that contributes to the -endangered or extinction of species
depletion of ozone layer.
4. Depletion of Ozone Layer
BRIEF TIMELINE • Greenhouse gases began warming the
OF CLIMATE world’s oceans in the early 1800s.
CHANGE • Industrial era

• The Great Barrier Reef, Australia

• Glacier National Park, Montana
PLACES AFFECTED • The Dead Sea
BY CLIMATE
CHANGE
• The Amazon
• Yamal Peninsula, Russia
• The Alps
• Alaska
CAUSE AND EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE
EFFECTS(FUTURE EFFECTS) OF CLIMATE
CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE CHANGE
• 1. Human-caused climate 1. Temperatures will continue to rise
change 2. Frost-free season(and growing
season) will lengthen
• 2. The Enhanced Greenhouse
Effect 3. More droughts and heat waves
4. Hurricanes will become stronger
• 3. Effects of Aerosols and more intense
5. Sea level will rise
6. Arctic likely to become ice-free
7. Endangering the survival of the
Earth’s flora and fauna, including
human beings.
• 1. Reduce the CO2 emissions
-reduce the use of fossil fuels
-use of clean alternative energy
(solar energy)
-support public transportation and
carpooling
• 2. Reforestation
• 3. Produce Biochar
1. Renewable energies
• The first way to prevent climate change is to move
away from fossil fuels. Renewable energies like
solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal.
2. Energy & water efficiency
• Producing clean energy is essential, but reducing
our consumption of energy and water by using
more efficient devices (e.g. LED light bulbs,
innovative shower system) is less costly and
equally important.
3. Sustainable transportation
• Promoting public transportation, carpooling, but
also electric and hydrogen mobility, can definitely
help reduce CO2 emissions and thus fight global
warming.
4. Sustainable infrastructure
• In order to reduce the CO2 emissions from buildings -
caused by heating, air conditioning, hot water or
lighting - it is necessary both to build new low energy
buildings, and to renovate the existing constructions.
5.Sustainable agriculture & forest management
• Encouraging better use of natural resources, stopping
massive deforestation as well as making agriculture
greener and more efficient should also be a priority.
6. Responsible consumption & recycling
• Adopting responsible consumption habits is crucial, be
it regarding food (particularly meat), clothing,
cosmetics or cleaning products. Last but not least,
recycling is an absolute necessity for dealing with
waste.
• In order to protect the environment, the World Alliance
for Efficient Solutions, established by the Solar Impulse
Foundation, is selecting 1000 innovative solutions that
help control and prevent global warming
