CAGAYAN VALLEY (Region II)
• Cagayan Valley is an administrative
region in the Philippines located in the
northeastern portion of Luzon. It is
composed of five provinces: Batanes,
Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and
Quirino.
• Most of the region lies in a large
valley, between the Cordilleras and
Sierra Madre mountain ranges.
CAGAYAN VALLEY (Region II)
• The Region is home to some of the
most recognized authors and writers
in the country like Florentino
Hornedo, Fernando Maramag & Edith
Tiempo.
• The Region is also rich in literary
pieces like Ybanag folk songs, Biuag
and Malana (Epic) and many more.
BIUAG and MALANA
Biuag is admired by a goddess when he was
still an infant. She gave him a present, three
stone was placed around his neck and it
signifies his powers, the first stone protect
him in any physical injury and the remaining
two stones give him powers.

On the other hand, there is also a man born


in Malaueg and has the same powers with
Biuag like lifting heavy objects, being as fast
as the wind and courageousness. Malana
uses his powers to help people like helping
the folks in his town when a devastating
typhoon washed away their crops.
At the age of eighteen, the two young
men fell in love with a single lady. A
young lady with unsurpassed beauty that
resides in the town of Tuao.
They found themselves struggling on
who will the young lady choose. So, in
order to figure out who will be chosen,
both men challenged each other to
determine the victor.
The battle between the two is
breathtaking and it became
controversial. The dueling place was
covered by men, women, and children
from all over the province, proving that
their abilities are extraordinary.
The people from Enrile and Malaueg are also
there to show their support to their champ.
The start of the battle was tough. Malana
fought with his bare hands while Biuag used
his spear. When the spear of Biuag broke
into pieces, the true bout started.
Unfortunately, because Biuag used a
crocodile to defeat Malana the young lady
did not choose him even though he won the
fight. She later then flew in the kingdom of
the air and clouds were she reigned with
Malana.
CHARACTERS OF THE STORY
BIUAG
• A man born in Enrile. He was given
powers by a goddess when he was an
infant.
• He is the Antagonist in the story.
• He has a ROUND character.
MALANA
• A good-hearted man from Malaueg.
He also possesses the same powers as
Biuag.
• Protagonist in the story
• He has a FLAT character.

DAUGHTER OF THE GODDESS


• Young lady with incomparable beauty.
• Served as the FOIL of the story.
SETTING
• The story took place in the province of
Cagayan
• Specifically, in the towns of Enrile,
Malaueg and Tuao
PLOT
EXPOSITION
• Biuag is born in the southernmost part of
Cagayan. Having with him three stone
from a goddess wherein it is the source of
his powers. Despite his prowess, he is still
not contented until he met a young lady
from the town of Tuao. Biuag fell in love
with her. Unfortunately, the young lady
also has another suitor named Malana
from Malaueg and he also posesses the
same powers that Biuag has.
RISING ACTION
• Biuag showed a sign that challenges
Malana.

CLIMAX
• Malana realized that the sign Biuag
showed was a challenge. He then officially
confronted Biuag for the hand of the
young lady. They battled to win the heart
of the lady.
FALLING ACTION
• Biuag emerged with the biggest crocodile
to devour Malana, the young man also
jumped from the mountain and as he
soon fell in mid-air, the young lady
transformed and revealed herself to
Biuag and all the witnesses.

RESOLUTION
• Malana won over Biuag and flew in the
kingdom of the air with the goddess’
daughter
CONFLICT
MAN VS MAN
• Biuag and Malana fought for the hand
of the young lady.

MAN VS HIMSELF
• Biuag struggled to do what is right
during his fight with Malana. As a
result he resorted to cheating that
cost him the battle.
POINT OF VIEW
THIRD PERSON P.O.V.
The story’s point of view is third person
or omniscient. The storyteller or the
author itself expanded the visual
narration of everything that happens
within the story. In which we, as the
readers help to create a more vivid
interpretation of the scenes in the story.
