×The objective of
this report is to
teach you how
your body organs
maintain internal
balance as it
experience
external changes.

STIMULUS RESPONSE MODEL

What comes to your mind
when you hear the word
feedback?`
Feedback is the response in which a
system (molecule, cell, organism, or
population)
influences the continued productivity
of a system.
×What is
Feedback
Mechanism
×and
Homeostasis?
Feedback Mechanism is a loop system that responds to
perturbation either in the same direction (positive
feedback) or in the opposite direction (negative feedback).

Homeostasis is the ability of the body to regulate or

maintain a stable condition within the internal
environment when dealing with external changes.
× HOW IS
HOMEOSTASIS
AND FEEDBACK
MECHANISM
RELATED?
Homeostasis and feedback mechanism is
correlated because homeostasis helps maintain
the body’s condition as it experience external
changes. These changes stimulate the receptor
that activates hormones that can either be done
in positive and negative feedbacks. This process
allows the body to return to its optimum
condition.
IMPORTANCE OF HOMEOSTASIS

To maintain internal environment as the

body experiences external changes.

To help the body maintain its optimum

state.

Terms to remember
× Stimulus - A structure that produces the change.
× Receptor - A structure that detects the change.
× Control Center - A structure that determines the
appropriate response to the stimulus.
× Effector - Can be organs, glands, or tissues that are
instructed to adjust the amount of output that
produces a desired effect.
× Response - The outcome of the adjustment that
should remove the initial stimulus.
× All cellular activities are
controlled by different
feedback mechanisms that
regulate the body
temperature, body fluids, gas
concentration, blood pressure,
and glucose concentration.
×Positive Feedback
×and
×Negative Feedback
Positive Feedback Mechanism – it is the opposite of the
negative feedback. Here, the increase in the concentration also
results in the increase in the rate process. Positive feedback
mechanism allows the output to enhance the original stimulus.
(example: pregnancy, blood clotting, )
Negative Feedback Mechanism – allows the internal
condition of the body to go back to its original state by
inhibiting or removing the stimulus. (example:
temperature regulation, Blood sugar Level,
Osmoregulation)
× Homeostasis
× In
× Osmoregulation
Osmoregulation balances concentrations of
solutes and water across semi-permeable
membranes, maintaining homeostasis.

Osmotic regulation, or osmoregulation, keeps

these solutes at the ideal concentrations. Osmotic
homeostasis is maintained despite the influence of
external factors such as temperature, diet, and
weather conditions.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a membrane
in response to osmotic pressure caused by an
imbalance of molecules on either side of the
membrane.
Osmoregulation is the process of maintenance
of salt and water balance (osmotic balance)
across membranes within the body’s fluids,
which are composed of water plus electrolytes
and non-electrolytes.

WHAT IF HOMEOSTASIS IS DISRUPTED?

× Homeostatic imbalance is the disruption of

homeostasis can lead to diseases or illness.

× FACTORS THAT DISRUPTS HOMEOSTASIS

 (Disease - is the abnormal condition of an organism which interrupts

the normal functions of the body that often leads to cellular
malfunction example: IDDM or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus)
 Toxins are products of plants, animals, fungi, or bacteria that hurt
cells in some way. These toxins can be attained though smoking,
drinking liquor, drugs (example: lung cancer, liver cancer, etc.)
 Pathogen is any small microbe that can infect your body and
make you sick. These phatogens includes bacteria, fungi, virus, and protists
(example: pneumonia)
× OTHER FACTORS THAT DISRUPTS HOMEOSTASIS

 Heredity or genetics
 Lifestyle or nutrition
 Physical activity
 Mental Health
 Environmental Exposure
× ORGANS THAT
HELPS MAINTAIN
HOMEOSTASIS
 Liver – responsible metabolizing toxic substances
and maintains carbohydrates.
 Kidney – responsible regulating blood water levels,
re-absorption of substances into the blood,
maintenance of salt and ion levels in the blood,
regulation of blood pH levels, and excretion of urea
and other toxins.
 Brain (Hypothalamus, the autonomic nervous
system, and the endocrine system).
