MAGAZINE

• It is an enclosure designed to protect the

goods from damage by other cargo during
loading and unloading , against adverse
weather conditions and to prevent
unauthorised access. It may be a fixed
structure on ship, a closed freight container ,
the loaded compartment of a freight vehicle
or a portable magazine.
LIMITATIONS ON CARRIAGE OF EXPLOSIVES

• Accomodation and Machinery spaces should be separated from explosives by an

A-Class bulkhead.
• Electrical equipment and cables should not generally be stowed in compartment
having explosives.
• Goods of compatibility group G,L or S require magazine stowage
• Explosive Goods belonging to different compatability group should be stowed
atleast 6m apart on deck.
• Mail, baggage, personal effects and household effects should not be stored in same
compartment or in a compartment above or below one containing goods of class 1
• Goods which have subsidiary risk of toxicity should be stowed away from
foodstuffs.
• Only VHF transmitters are permitted to be used provided their power output does
not exceed 25W and the aerial should not come within 2 m of the explosives.
Precautions during stowage,handling,loading
and carriage of explosives
• Appropriate Magazine should be available for safe stowage.
• No electrical cables should pass through the magazine. If it is unavoidable, the cables
should be sheathed by an approved, sealed, non combustible barrier and tested before
loading.
• Explosives are unstable when wet and should be stowed in a cool, dry,well-ventillated
space away from hot bulkheads or decks.
• Electrical fittings must be disconnected . Ventillation fans must be flame proof if not
disconneceted.
• Explosives must be stowed from living quarters.
• Masts must be fitted with an efficient lightning conductor as lightning presents a grave
danger.
